Actor Olivia Wilde turns director for the acclaimed Booksmart, a coming of age comedy that's already wowed critics. And lucky Cineworld Unlimited members get to watch it in advance on 6th May.
Wilde, best known for her appearances in Cowboys & Aliens and Rush, fashions a hilariously filthy-minded yet truthful story about two misfit high-schoolers. Lady Bird scene-stealer Beanie Feldstein plays Molly, a straight-A student aiming for college with zero social skills whatsoever. Molly's outsider status makes her best friends with fellow social outcast and academic high-flyer Amy (Beautiful Boy's Kaitlyn Dever).
Realising that academic qualifications and a wild night on the town aren't mutually exclusive, the two girls decide to celebrate the end of their high school year in style. Equipped with essential items including mace, they set out to prove that bookworms also have a crazy side.
Executive produced by the Anchorman duo of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, Booksmart was one of the hits of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Co-starring an array of familiar comic faces including Lisa Kudrow and Jason Sudeikis, the movie has generated warm responses from critics.
"Booksmart is inclusive and progressive without feeling forced," writes Benjamin Lee in The Guardian, "and announces Wilde, an actor who hasn’t always found her groove on screen, as a major director, one of the more impressive behind-the-camera transitions I have seen for a while. Her film reaches the audience-friendly highs of a studio comedy while retaining an indie sensibility, both in its visuals and its tone, and coupled with the script’s rooted awareness of the moment we’re now in, it feels fresh, a film that will be rewatched and quoted, held on a pedestal by those who understand its necessity."
