The French Dispatch trailer is marvellously meta and wonderfully Wes Anderson

Changing aspect ratios, a mixture of black and white and colour, and a fabulous, all-star cast – it can only be the first trailer for Wes Anderson's latest movie, The French Dispatch.

Anderson veteran Bill Murray leads the ensemble as an ex-pat American journalist who's relocated to a fictional French town to begin his own periodical. Known as 'The French Dispatch', it soon enlists the help of other rootless American journos roaming around the continent, played by the likes of Frances McDormand, Owen Wilson and Jeffrey Wright.

Through this quirky kaleidoscope, Anderson is able to examine a period of great social upheaval and madness, including the French 'youthquake' movement that's embodied by a suitably chic-looking Timothee Chalamet. Even the trailer upends our expectations, divided into chapters that introduce our respective journalists and the stories they're covering – well, you don't come to one of his movies for normality, do you?

The dazzling line-up of A-listers also includes Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton (who appears to be our narrator), Willem Dafoe, Lea Seydoux, Benicio Del Toro, Saoirse Ronan and Anjelica Huston. The film comes hot on the heels of Anderson's hits Isle of Dogs and The Grand Budapest Hotel, the latter of which won several Oscars, so expectations are sky-high for The French Dispatch.
