Ammonite: watch the new trailer for the Kate Winslet-Saiorse Ronan drama

In upcoming drama Ammonite, the waves lashing England's south-west coast are barely more tempestuous than the romance at the story's centre. God's Own Country filmmaker Francis Lee helms this sensitive tale of real-life 19th century geologist Mary Anning, and her passionate relationship with Charlotte Murchison. Ahead of the new trailer (scroll down to watch it), here's the new poster.

Lee has scored with his two main players: Titanic's Kate Winslet and Little Women's Saoirse Ronan are set to bring emotional ballast to this story of two women defying social convention. When the deeply introverted Anning takes in the emotionally traumatised Murchison, their initially frosty distrust soon transforms into something that break down boundaries. But given they're from two very different worlds, how long can it last?

The director's 2017 drama God's Own Country was praised for its honest and incisive look at same-sex romance amidst the wind-lashed Yorkshire moors. Josh O'Connor and Alec Secareanu (who appears in Ammonite) were acclaimed for their roles in the BAFTA-nominated film.

That very collision between romance, the elements and societal expectation now fuels Lee's new film, which closes the 2020 BFI London Film Festival. Oscar nominees Winslet and Ronan have received strong reviews for their performances, with The Daily Telegraph's Robbie Collin raving: "Winslet and Ronan don't have chemistry so much as a kind of mesmerising tectonic accord, and slowly but surely, the two converge."

Ammonite is listed as coming soon and many are tipping it as an Oscar 2021 frontrunner, so check out the new trailer below and tweet us your thoughts @Cineworld.
