As the hype for Avengers: Age of Ultron skyrockets, it's nice to see that the film's writer/director Joss Whedon still finds time to enthuse about related Marvel superhero projects.
In a recent interview with Buzzfeed News, Whedon not only lavishes praise on Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish's original script for this year's Ant-Man. He also describes it as "the best Marvel script ever written." How so?
"I had no interest in Ant-Man," Whedon recalls. "[Then,] I read the script and was like, 'Of course! This is so good!'" He adds that the script was "irreverent and funny," and that Wright "could make what was small large, and vice versa."
Wright, the filmmaker behind Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim, controversially departed Ant-Man last year over rumoured creative differences with Marvel. The film will be brought to our screens this August with filmmaker Peyton Reed at the helm, and Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas in front of the camera.
Wright's original vision for the movie will likely stand as one of those great 'what if' scenarios, although he and Cornish still get a credit for screen story. Whedon himself finds it hard to contain his disappointment at Wright's departure.
"I don't know where things went wrong," he says. "But I was very sad. Because I thought, 'This is a no-brainer. This is Marvel getting it exactly right.' Whatever dissonance that came, whatever it was, I don't understand why it was bigger than a marriage that seemed so right."
However it turns out, we're looking forward to Ant-Man when it finally hits our screens on 17th July. If that's too far off, get your Marvel fix and click here to book your tickets for Avengers: Age of Ultron.
