While we're all still reeling from Avengers: Infinity War, astute viewers would've noticed that there was one big (or should that be 'ant-sized') hole in the line-up of heroes.

Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) might not have featured fighting alongside Captain America (Chris Evans) or Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), but this summer he is getting his very own sequel: Ant-Man and The Wasp.

Despite being set between events of Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War, the Ant-Man sequel might just hold more answers to the big questions than you would expect…

'Giant-Man'-sized spoilers ahead if you haven't seen Infinity War yet!

It will explain Ant-Man's absence

The next instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will in fact be set between the events of Civil War – in which Ant-Man joined Team Cap to battle Team Iron Man – and Infinity War. Ant-Man was mentioned in Infinity War in the same breath as fellow absentee, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), both of them being reportedly under "house arrest".

It is likely that Ant-Man and The Wasp will delve into this further, and perhaps will answer the question about why they were both under house arrest in the first place, in turn missing the events of Infinity War.

It will likely show us who else dies at the end of Infinity War

Of course, that Infinity War ending has to come into play in Ant-Man and The Wasp, right? Infinity War's final moments saw big bad Thanos (Josh Brolin) destroy half of all life in the universe by amassing all the Infinity Stones. As mentioned, the events of Ant-Man and The Wasp itself precede this world-changing event, so while you shouldn't expect to see our heroes turning to dust halfway through the film, there is a strong possibility that the inevitable post-credits scene will tie these two films together.

This is still all speculation, but with both Ant-Man and The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) being confirmed for Avengers 4, it is unlikely they turned to dust. But then again after the shocks of Infinity War, who knows what to expect anymore? Instead, we might discover the fates of other characters in the Ant-Man world; perhaps Lang's scientist mentor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Scott's daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson) or maybe even sidekick and scene-stealer Luis (Michael Peña)?

This would certainly make the stakes higher for both of our heroes come the next Avengers movie.

It should answer fan theories about the Quantum Realm

Glimpsed in the first Ant-Man and alluded to in the sequel trailers already, it is likely that Ant-Man and The Wasp will delve further into the mysterious Quantum Realm. Described as "a reality where all concepts of time and space become irrelevant", in the first movie the minuscule hero shrunk himself beyond subatomic size to enter the Quantum Realm. It was also briefly witnessed in 2016's Doctor Strange, our introduction to the dimension-manipulating title character (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Reportedly trapped in the Quantum Realm, "shrinking for all eternity" (as Hank Pym tells our hero), is Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), Pym's wife and the original superhero incumbent of the 'Wasp' costume. Having successfully escaped from the Quantum Realm already, Ant-Man is likely to return to this terrifying dimension, and, we're speculating, will somehow be able to rescue Janet from her fate. And this may well have a knock-on effect on the events of Avengers 4...

It may introduce the concept of Quantum time travel

The Quantum Realm is likely to be crucial to the events of Avengers 4, and is apparently also set to feature in next year's MCU film, Captain Marvel. The origin story of Air Force pilot turned superhero Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) is set in the 1990s, and will explore more of this realm, likely holding even more answers to Infinity War and, consequently, alluding to the events of Avengers 4 in the process.

The Quantum Realm appears to be the common thread tying together Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel, so we're fairly certain this will end up being key to Avengers 4. It is widely rumoured that Avengers 4 will see our heroes using time travel to reverse the events of Infinity War and stop Thanos from carrying out his evil plans. (Chris Evans was snapped on set wearing Captain America's original costume, suggesting some element of time travel may be involved.)

As Hank Pym reveals in Ant-Man, the Quantum Realm is a place "where all concepts of time and space become irrelevant". It's possible it could be used as a gateway, perhaps even a way of travelling back in time to rewrite history. And perhaps this is the "one in 14 million" chance of defeating Thanos, alluded to by Doctor Strange in Infinity War…
