Last night saw our Unlimited screening of blackly comic thriller A Simple Favour, directed by Paul Feig and starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively.
The director of hit comedies including Bridesmaids and Spy swaps slapstick for something sleazier and creepier in this adaptation of Darcey Bell's novel. Kendrick stars as vlogger Stephanie whose investigation into the disappearance of her best friend Emily (Lively) uncovers all kinds of skeletons in the closet.
So what's the response from Unlimited members? We'll start with this from Sir Daniel Mumford.
Brilliantly stylish movie, gripping and funny too! Clever writing/direction...the twists and turns kept you guessing for the whole film, really had no idea which way it was going to go! #ASimpleFavour @AnnaKendrick47 @blakelively @ASimpleFavor @paulfeig #UnlimitedScreening

Spidey Swims says the multitude of twists and turns will keep viewers guessing.
My stars. That has been by far the best film I’ve seen in a long time. More twists than a super roller coaster and fabulous acting from all the cast. Something like “When you mess with one Mom, you mess with us all” was brilliant.

Victoria praises the performances of Kendrick and Lively.
Loved it! Kept me guessing about the twists which was great. Really glad the trailer didn’t give away all the plot like some other films. @AnnaKendrick47 and @blakelively were fabulous. #ASimpleFavour

Will Marshall says the movie vastly exceeded his expectations and then some.
I’m not ashamed to admit it’s one of my favourite movies of the year! #ASimpleFavour smart and funny @blakelively and @AnnaKendrick47 were amazing too! 10/10 pic.twitter.com/teyFEYrv4n

Henry Peters loved the movie – and is trying very hard not to give away spoilers.
From the 60s style opening the film had me. Anna Kendrick is fantastic, Blake Lively menacing and it didn’t take long to forget Henry Golding is the love interest in Crazy Rich Asians. I say all this as it would be wrong to reveal even a word of the plot. Fan-bloody-tastic.

On the other hand, Alex says the movie compares unfavourably with another missing person's movie.
It wasn't a bad film, but felt like a bargain-bin Gone Girl. The twists were both fairly predictable and very "deus ex machina"-esque. Comedy was fairly cliché. Didn't care about the characters. Felt very vapid for the first half, but enjoyable later on. Not going to see again.

And Josh Trew has mixed thoughts on the movie's tone and pacing.
I’m mixed. It was totally confused, yet funny and intense. It was well acted, and yet the pacing was ridiculously slow. Still, I recommend watching it, it’s a good enough film
