Sequels to cult classic early noughties movies? Groundbreaking. But no, actually this is great news and a trend we could not be more over the moon about it, trend-hating Miranda Priestly be damned.
With the sequel to the 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada officially in production, we’re already theorising about what we could see in the next instalment, with its 2026 release date making it a whole two decades on from the original. Here's everything we hope to see from the sequel, as well as all the confirmed details so far including cast and release date.
They’re missing a trick if they don’t call it The Devil Still Wears Prada
Currently the project is just The Devil Wears Prada 2. Sure, it’s simple, it’s chic. But we would be so here for a little bit of fun wordplay. After all, surely Miranda Priestly wouldn’t be seen dead in anything other than Prada. Right? The Devil Wears Gucci just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
The plot needs to represent the state of publishing today and the rise of AI
The first film was adapted from the book of the same name by Lauren Weisberger, and she did write her own sequel in 2013, Revenge Wears Prada. According to Variety, though, the movie sequel is likely to deviate from the book, with Miranda trying to keep her career afloat in an era where print media is on the decline, while her ex-assistant Emily is riding on the highs of working at a luxury group, the advertising dollars of which Miranda oh so desperately needs.
Considering the landscape of today with Artificial Intelligence a constant point of conversation, particularly in the creative sphere, it would feel amiss not to have this play a part in the movie. It’s a tricky balance trying not to put a sell-by-date on its relevance. Then again, The Devil Wears Prada did see Miranda seeking the manuscript of one such fantasy book that does place it firmly in the early noughties, so it doesn’t feel like a tall ask to introduce the very real problem journalists face today with AI.
Anne Hathaway is still a part of the story in a big way
Currently plot details are scarce, and only Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt’s characters have really been talked about in terms of where we find them in the sequel. While Anne Hathaway is confirmed to be a part of the project, we just hope her role is more than just a cameo. While we did explore a lot of her story in the first film, and we’re just not ready to let go of Andy Sachs’ main character energy.
