Upcoming books into movies to celebrate Children's Book Day

It's Children's Book Day and we're celebrating with a round-up of family-friendly book-to-movie adaptations arriving in Cineworld cinemas this year. Scroll down to find out more.

1. The Bad Guys (on release now)

Aaron Blabey's bestselling graphic novel series is adapted for the big screen for the first time. The concept focuses on a world in which anthropomorphic animals and humans co-exist, and our central collective is a group of rogueish yet likeable criminals.

Sam Rockwell leads the all-star voice cast as the rakish Mr. Wolf, who cuts a deal so that his team of crims can avoid jail time. The gang includes Anthony Ramos as Mr. Piranham and Awkwafina as Ms. Tarantula.

2. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (released April 8th)

The Fantastic Beasts saga, initiated by J.K. Rowling as a Hogwarts textbook and, later, a film series, promises to unspool the titular Dumbledore's (Jude Law) most closely held mysteries.

As we continue to connect the dots between this universe and the start of the Harry Potter franchise (remember, there are two more Fantastic Beasts movies after this one), we also get ready for the impending pure-blood/muggle conflict.

The movie introduces Mads Mikkelsen as the rampaging Gellert Grindelwald and reunites us with Eddie Redmayne's brave magizoologist Newt Scamander.

3. The Railway Children Return (released July 15th)

Edith Nesbit's classic children's story The Railway Children prompted a classic 1970s adaptation, starring a young Jenny Agutter. The late of a group of orphaned World War II evacuees, their new countryside home and their absentee father is enough to get anyone of a certain age teary-eyed.

Long-overdue sequel The Railway Children Return showcases a returning Agutter in the pivotal role of Roberta aka 'Bobbie.' The excellent cast also includes Tom Courtenay and Sheridan Smith. And, for the purposes of both nostalgia and posterity, the movie was, like the original, shot on the scenic Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in Yorkshire.

4. Matilda (released December 2nd)

Tim Minchin's stunningly successful musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic novel Matilda is brought to the screen. Director Matthew Warchus helmed the 2010 Royal Shakespeare Company iteration of the musical, and he reunites with the writer of the stage show, Dennis Kelly.

Newcomer Alisha Weir portrays the plucky Matilda, a bookish young girl with clairvoyance. Emma Thompson portrays the dreaded Miss Trunchbull and Lashana Lynch is the kind-hearted Miss Honey, while Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough portray Matilda's grotesque parents.
