Biopics, criminals, and campaigners – the upcoming movies based on true stories

So often, the most compelling stories are those rooted in truth. Able to hone in on real, raw emotion and the journeys we as people go through – there’s no better way to feel connected to characters on a screen.

From biopics of famous musicians and sporting stars to the incredible individuals advocating for representation and understanding, here are all the upcoming movies based on true stories you can look forward to watching when they arrive at Cineworld.

I Swear (10th October)

Films based on true stories are one of the key ways we see representation and diversity in the industry, and I Swear brings to light the inspiring and emotional story of John Davidson. Diagnosed with Tourette’s at fifteen in 1980s Britain, he faced backlash as he navigated the largely misunderstood condition, often finding himself in hot water one way or another. Eventually, though, he became a key campaigner for bringing awareness of Tourette’s, with I Swear charting that brave and inspiring journey.

The Smashing Machine (3rd October)

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is Michael Kerr in this A24 biopic of the UFC champion's rise to fame, as well as the tumultuous fall as injury led to an opioid addiction, telling a story that goes far beyond the boxing ring. Emily Blunt stars as Dawn Staples, Kerr’s then-wife, with professional boxers and MMA fighters also set to star both as themselves and other key figures present in Kerr’s life.

Roofman (17th October)

Something a little different in tone, Roofman is the biopic of a fugitive and former army reserve, Jeffrey Manchester. Played by Channing Tatum, Jeffrey earned the nickname due to entering McDonald’s restaurants via the roof and stealing. The movie charts his escape from prison by hiding under a bus and evading re-arrest by hiding out in a Toys “R” Us store. All this is put at risk, though, when he falls for a divorced mom, played by Kirsten Dunst.

Hoping to follow in the successful footsteps of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocket Man, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere zeros in on Bruce Springsteen on the cusp of releasing his 1982 album, Nebraska, which would see him soaring towards global stardom. Jeremy Allen White portrays Springsteen, who gives an earnest and anguished portrayal as he wrestles with both his success and those things he cannot change.

Michael (24th April, 2026)

It’s been a long time coming. In fact, it seems surprising it’s taken a studio this long to make a film about the King of Pop. With the late star’s own nephew, Jaafar Jackson, set to play Michael Jackson himself, John Logan has written the script for the project, which will follow a timeline from Jackson’s career in The Jackson 5 up to 1993 when the first abuse allegations were made.
