Upcoming video game movies – adaptations confirmed from Nintendo, SEGA, and more

Even though video games have been around for decades and the industry has become one of the biggest entertainment sectors in the world, it’s only in the last few years that Hollywood has started to take the medium seriously with a handful of faithful adaptation for both fans and newcomers alike.

Films the The Super Mario Bros Movie and Detective Pikachu have gone on to be big hits at the box office, whilst also serving as proof of concept for how these rich digital worlds might be translated to the big screen.

Thankfully, more production houses seem to be hopping on the trend and there are quite a few video game adaptations on the horizon. Keep on reading to find out what’s in store.

Mortal Kombat II (October 24th)

2021’s Mortal Kombat gave fans exactly what they’d been asking for. It was an adaptation that took the core storyline of the games seriously, packed it full of incredible actors like Hiroyuki Sanada, and cranked up the violence to really deliver on what the series is known for.

The sequel is ready to kick things up a notch by introducing fan-favourite character Johnny Cage, this time played by none other than Karl Urban. The trailer hints at even more carnage than the first film, but with the humour that only Cage’s character brings to the fray.

The Legend of Zelda (2027)

At the time of writing, not a lot is known about Nintendo’s long-awaited film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda series. The only things we know for sure is that it’s going to be a live-action flick and that Link and Zelda will be played by newcomers Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason respectively.

Given that there are so many games within the series, it’s hard to know for sure which of them will serve as the main source material for the film, but our money is on either Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time as they stand out for having the biggest impact in the minds of fans.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (2027)

Given that the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise has become one of the most profitable game adaptations of all time, it should be of no surprise to anyone that there’s a fourth film currently in the works.

Much like The Legend of Zelda, little is known about the film just yet (we don’t even know if Jim Carrey will be returning as Dr Robotnik), but with Amy Rose and Metal Sonic making a last minute appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it’s safe to say that both of those characters will take up more screentime for this follow-up.

Fight Night’s at Freddy’s 2 (December 5th)

Very few games have taken the internet by storm quite like Five Nights at Freddy’s. The relatively low budget title which saw you step into the role of security guard at a haunted pizza parlour where the animatronics want to kill you was an instant hit, and as it turned out, the premise fit a feature film perfectly.

Several of the film’s cast are set to reappear in the sequel including Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard, which almost certainly makes that first film essential viewing before the sequel drops.

The Super Mario Bros Movie 2 (April 3rd 2026)

The Super Mario Bros Movie was, by every measure, a delight. The film did an amazing job of bringing the iconic Mushroom Kingdom to life with eye-catching visuals and a brilliant voice cast that helped to add depth to previously voiceless characters like Mario, Luigi and Toad (outside of a few catchphrases of course).

From all that we can gather, it seems as though a sequel will be even bigger in its scope which, to us at least, sounds like more characters will be brought into the mix. We’ve yet to see film versions of Wario, Yoshi, Bowser Jr and Rosalina, so our money is one at least one of them making an appearance.

The Angry Birds Movie 3 (January 29th 2027)

Very few games are as world-renowned in the modern era than Angry Birds, and even though we’d be hard stretched to get three films worth of material out of a game that’s all about flinging birds from one end of the screen to the other, the two adaptations we’ve had so far have been great fun for the whole family.

At this point, next to nothing is known about the direction this film might take but we’ve been surprised if the core cast (Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride) didn’t reappear for this installment.

- Death Stranding (TBC)
- Street Fighter (2026)
- Stray (TBC)
- Ghost of Tsushima (TBC)
