The sequel to the 2023 sleeper hit – adapted from Scott Cawthon’s video game series – Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will be released at Cineworld on 5th December – and you can book to watch it in the Superscreen special format.
With the grizzly animatronics back, start of the video game adaptation Josh Hutcherson shared with Variety that fans of the original video games itself won’t be disappointed. “The main focus is making something that the FNAF fandom will go crazy for.” He added, “Sometimes I’m like, ‘This doesn’t make any sense! How can I possibly do this?’ And they’re like, ‘It’s from the game.’” Despite this, Hutcherson clarified he’s "on board, but it's crazy."

Traumatic context of Five Nights at Freddy’s
Set in the year 2000, Five Nights at Freddy’s centres Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), a troubled young man who is fighting to retain custody of his younger sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), and keep her from their manipulative Aunt Jane (Mary Stuart Masterson).
He still wears the scars of witnessing the abduction of his younger brother, Garrett, and tries to revisit the memory through “dream work” in order to identify the kidnapper and reunite with his brother.
To make ends meet, he takes up a job offered by his evasive career counselor, Steve Raglan (Matthew Lillard) as a security guard at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, now closed after a series of incidents in which children went missing.
But what could be creepy about an old pizza parlour watched over by four adorable animatronics… Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, as well as Golden Freddy. And it isn’t look before Mike discovers they are haunted by ghosts – ghosts of the five children that were murdered years ago in the restaurant.
Mike is haunted by other missing children
These ghosts visit Mike in his dreams and seem to have a connection to Garrett’s disappearance.
Meanwhile, in order to keep Abby from the clutches of Aunt Jane, Mike begins bringing her to work at Freddy’s. Of course, as mentioned, the animatronics are adorable, so Abby is unsurprisingly drawn to them.
Mike is warned by Vanessa Shelly (Elizabeth Lail), a police officer who seems to know quite a lot about Freddy’s and its animatronics.
In his dreams, Mike attempts to strike a deal with the ghost children in helping him to identify who took Garrett and killed him. In a moment of madness, he offers Abby, but quickly attempts to retract it when he realises the children are just a part of a wider scheme.
The serial killer reveal
It’s revealed that the orchestrator is William Afton, who had fronted as Mike’s career counsellor, Steve. It turns out he’s a serial killer who murdered the children and put their bodies into the animatronics. It is also revealed he kidnapped (and presumably killed) Garett.
Afton returns to attempt to kill Mike and Abby in the Spring Bonnie suit, but ends up stabbing his own daughter, who turns out to be Vanessa, when she attempts to stop his next murderous spree.
Mike speaks to the possessed animatronics, explaining to the ghosts they were being manipulated by their own killer. They turn on Afton and help to protect Mike and Abby.
When they attack Afton, the mechanism in the suit he wears proves faulty and ends up crushing Afton, leaving him trapped inside. The animatronics then drag him into the back room, but not before Afton declares, “I always come back!”
The aftermath
Mike and Abby escape in time as Freddy’s crumbles, and they’re safe from being separated as Aunt Jane was previously killed when trying to vandalise Mike’s place of work.
Vanessa is alive, but left in a coma in hospital following her stabbing.
In terms of those adorable animatronics, the ghosts of the children appear to have found peace, the fate of the animatronic bodies unknown. Afton is thought to be slowly dying in the suit, but with a sequel on the way, who really knows what’s in store next…
