Marty McFly first sees the DMC DeLorean time machine
What will make you feel better when your band just choked on an important audition and you’re having an existential crisis that you might end up like your parents? You go and see your kooky scientist friend and he reveals to you he’s turned a DMC DeLorean into a time machine.
Given this film came out in the mid 80s, by today’s standards the reveal might leave something to be desired, but the DeLorean appearing from the back of a lorry through smoke à la Stars in Their Eyes (iykyk!) is something special, especially blown up on the big screen – and Cineworld is taking that to the next level with the option to book and watch Back to the Future on one of its floor to ceiling Superscreens.
Marty escapes terrorists and the DeLorean travels back in time for the first time
In order to fuel the DeLorean time machine, Doc admits to stealing plutonium from a group of terrorists, and it’s not long before they’ve caught him up in the Twin Pines mall carpark, just as Doc is inputting the date 5th November, 1955 in order to give the DeLorean a time travelling spin.
While Doc is hit by the terrorists, Marty attempts to make a getaway in the DeLorean. As he hits speeds of over 90 miles per hour, the landscape quickly changes from the built-up car park to rural fields, a scarecrow hurtling towards the windshield.
Marking the first time it successfully time travels, watching this scene in 4DX will be a treat, with the motions of the chairs in the cinema mirroring the bumpy transition into the past, and wind to reflect the speed of the vehicle. Ever wanted to know what it feels like to travel? 4DX is the answer.
Double McFly vision
Rocking up in 1955, Marty enters a diner and struggles to be understood with his 80s turns of phrase and requests for a drink that doesn’t yet exist – a Pepsi Free. He also doesn’t realise he’s sat next to his own father, thirty years prior. The audience is given hints though, as the two do the exact same mannerisms in sync, before his identity as George McFly is revealed when bully Biff Tannen enters the diner.
Incredible displays of characterisation from both actors, witnessing these small but effective details in IMAX is the only way to go. That, and the amazing sets used to capture both the essence of the 1980s and the 1950s.
McFly is chased by Biff and his crew and “creates” the skateboard
Marty protects his father from Biff by tripping him up, only for the bully to turn on him. Making a sharpish escape from the diner, Marty hijacks a kid’s homemade “scooter”, formed by using wooden grates, breaks off the front and impresses them with their first ever sighting of a skateboard – the skateboard wouldn’t be invented until 1976.
The whole stunt is incredible from start to finish as Marty hangs onto a car in order to keep distance between him and Biff’s gang. Soon, though, they catch up, intending to ram him into a truck filled with manure.
Marty sends his skateboard under the car, though, and clambers over the top of the convertible, hopping back onto the board, with Biff sailing straight into said truck.
It’s an incredible bit of slapstick humour and reliving it in 4DX at Cineworld will be incredible. From the wind in your hair as Marty expertly skates away, to the rumbles and vibrations in your seat. There may even be a drop of water or too as Biff and his gang land in a pile of manure.
Doc manically fixing the wire at the town court house in time for the lightning strike
Attempting to get back to the present day, Marty has to find Doc in the past to help him – but plutonium does not yet exist. The only source capable of achieving 1.21 gigawatts is a strike of lightening, so the two hatch a plan to harness the next lightning storm, conveniently happening in just a few days time.
Of course, it’s never actually that simple, though. As Doc is setting up the wire which will help to propel the DeLorean back to 1985, it disconnects from a streetlamp.
With Marty unaware and quickly accelerating towards the town courthouse, Doc loops the wire over one of the clock hands and heroically zip lines down from the clock tower down to reconnect the wire.
As the DeLorean makes contact with the wire, the lightning cracks across the sky and the skid marks of the time machine leave a trail of flames. Expect plenty of strobe lighting and feeling like you’re about to accelerate out of your seat when watching this scene in 4DX.
We can't wait to relive this movie on the big screen. Book your tickets below and see Back to the Future in 4DX, IMAX, and Superscreen.
