August has got everything. Family movies for the summer holidays, the latest horror releases for a real fright, and even a rom-com for date night. Get an early noughties nostalgic hit with the Freaky Friday sequel, or opt for something sinister with the Philippou brothers’ Bring Her Back. There’s also another Stephen King adaptation coming with Tom Hiddleston starring in The Life of Chuck, as well as love triangle goodness with Celine Song’s follow-up to Past Lives with Materialists. Read on for all the new movie releases coming in August.
Keen to watch two or more movies this month? It’s worth considering a Cineworld Unlimited membership, which works out as less than two cinema tickets a month. There’s also a load of other great perks including discounts on cinema snacks and drinks, and money off partner restaurants.
Bring Her Back (1st August)
Off the back of the success of Talk to Me, the Philippou brothers return with Bring Her Back, starring Sally Hawkins, a grieving mother who fosters Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong) after they find their father dead. Soon they realise Laura (Hawkins) wishes to use Piper in a ritual to bring back her own daughter, with the film described by Secret Screaming attendees as “soul crushing” and “brilliant”.
Freakier Friday (8th August)
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back as Anna and Tess – and it turns out lightning indeed can strike twice as they find themselves in the middle of another body swap phenomenon in Freakier Friday. If it happens twice, is it actually that phenomenal, though? Anyway, this time it’s a double body swap as Anna and Tess find themselves trapped in the bodies of Anna’s daughter Harper and her soon-to-be step-daughter Lily.
Weapons (8th August)
Coming out in a number of special formats, witness horror in 4DX for any extra thrilling, frightening experience. Zach Cregger’s Weapons is out this month, described as a mystery horror that sees a whole class of kids mysteriously disappear at exactly the same time but one, and the teacher remains suspect number one.
Materialists (15th August)
Rom-coms are so back, and we could not be more excited for Celine Song’s Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson as an upmarket matchmaker who finds herself in the love triangle of dreams. Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans? C’mon! Romantic tropes aplenty, the movies UK release has been long anticipated, but it's out this month, and we are ready!
Nobody 2 (15th August)
Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is back, but he's taking a load off this time – or trying to. Drifting from his wife and kids, they decide to go on vacation and get away from the grind of being a workaholic assassin. When they arrive at Wild Bill's Majestic Midway and Waterpark, though, they find themselves in a bind with a corrupt theme park operator and the small town's shady sheriff.
Together (15th August)
Dave Franco and Alison Brie, a real-life married couple, star in what we hope is a far cry from their own reality. In Together, they play Tim and Millie, a couple who choose to move to the countryside in an attempt to rekindle their relationship and bring them closer... together. A supernatural body horror movie, you can only imagine how literal that gets when the pair go on a hike in their new home and fall into a cave during a storm. Deciding to stay there for the night, they wake to find their legs fused together. But oh wow, it gets so much weirder...
The Life of Chuck (20th August)
Stephen King's novella hits the big screen in this adaptation from Mike Flanagan, telling the story of middle school teacher Marty Anderson in reverse as he experiences all the wonders and pitfalls of human life. Tom Hiddleston stars as the titular character, with Jacob Tremblay and Benjamin Pajak playing his younger versions. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Hamill, and Karen Gillan also star.
Don’t forget, Cineworld is also running its £1 Family Films event, with favourites for all ages returning to the big screen, including The Wild Robot, Mufasa: The Lion King, and A Minecraft Movie.
You can also benefit from Cineworld’s Family Ticket, allowing adults to go to the cinema and pay kids prices on family films.
This month you can also get involved in Cineworld's Summer of Surprises. From now until Sunday, 31st August, you'll receive a scratch card for every purchase of food and drink or merchandise, with prizes spanning from free snacks to a year of Unlimited.
