Will The Inbetweeners 2 prove to be the final outing for hapless lads Will, Simon, Neil and Jay? You may have noticed over the last few months, I've traced the amusingly contradictory responses from the film's stars Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison and James Buckley (click here to read Thomas' definitive word on the subject; and click here to read Harrison's response to the contrary).
Well, now Simon Bird (who plays the unerringly geeky and inept Will) has waded into the debate during a conversation with comedian Alan Carr on his Chatty Man Summer Special. The Mirrorreports Bird as saying: "We wont be making another film after this one. Successful films make hundreds of millions, unsuccessful ones make about $20m, our first film."
The action this time sends our horny foursome Down Under where they get into the usual scrapes involving alcohol, unfriendly locals and annoying hippy backpackers. But does the whole 'Brits abroad' thing translate well outside the UK? Bird doesn't seem so sure. " The Inbetweeners only took $38,000 in America," he adds. "Our writers say they have run out of ideas so we wont be making any more films."
Just goes to show that numbers speak louder than laughs. But do you think Bird's pessimism is unfounded? Given the UK's sheer goodwill towards both The Inbetweeners TV series and the enormously successful 2011 film (£57m at the box office), a third movie perhaps shouldn't be ruled out.
