Cast your mind back to 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Andrew Garfield was the titular web-slinger in the second instalment of a planned Sony superhero franchise.
Sadly, the movie's poor box office takings put paid to that, and indeed to plans for a Sinister Six movie. The Marvel villains' collective was cinematically established in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 via the presence of Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti, making a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance).
Having been introduced in a Sony Spider-Man property, Electro is now poised to make the jump to the Disney-distributed Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jamie Foxx will return as Electro in the third Tom Holland MCU Spider-Man movie.
Jon Watts will helm the project, which has now been delayed to November 2021. It will pick up the thread (geddit?) of 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, which culminated in the malicious leak of Spider-Man's true identity, Peter Parker.
This is an overt crossover between distinctly separate Sony/Disney universes, something that was also apparent during Far From Home's climax. The film re-introduced J.K. Simmons' superbly splenetic Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson, previously only seen in the Sami Raimi-directed, Sony-distributed Spidey trilogy from 2002 to 2007, starring Tobey Maguire.
It remains to be seen what role Foxx's tragic engineer-turned-supervillain will play in the new Spider-Man movie. Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon and Tony Revolori are all expected to return as the project prepares to shoot in Atlanta this autumn.
