It’s been 25 years since the first X-Men movie was released. To celebrate – and to prepare for the X-Men to make their Avengers debut in Phase 6 movie Avengers: Doomsday at the end of next year – Cineworld is putting on a Best of X-Men Film Season. Taking place across August, we’re bringing back six movies from the X-Men franchise to the big screen.
Ready to relive all those mutant memories? Here are picks of some of the best X-Men scenes across the titles in our X-Men Film Season line-up.
BOOK X-MEN FILM SEASON TICKETS
X-Men (2000) - 5th August
It is widely considered that the chess match that takes place between Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) is one of the best. Hugely symbolic, it represents the ongoing battle between the two characters, with one pushing for the peaceful coexistence of humans and mutants alongside each other, while the other wishes for the mutants to survive through domination.
Considering it is a scene that features more than once throughout the franchise, how could it not be one of the most impactful?
X2 (2003) - 7th August
Starting with a bang, the opening sequence in X2 is just too good not to talk about. Epic in its execution, a Nightcrawler enters the White House and attempts to attack and kill the President of the United States.
This is our first introduction to Nightcrawler, portrayed by a sinister Alan Cumming. Equipped with a pointed tail and some sleek teleportation talents, Nightcrawler manages to evade the POTUS’ security detail and almost, almost assassinate him.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) - 9th August
Will we ever get over the emotional trauma of that pivotal scene? Are we about to bring it up and retraumatise you all? Yes. Because we can’t not. The confrontation between Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) was incredibly raw and heartbreaking.
When the Phoenix within Jean Grey awakens and begins to destroy everything that comes within its range, Wolverine realises he’s the only one that can stop her thanks to his healing powers. For a moment Jean is able to break through in an emotional exchange of love and begs him to save her, which he does by stabbing her with his claws. We’re not crying, you are.

X-Men: First Class (2011) - 13th August
The first of the X-Men prequel films, introducing another star-studded cast to the franchise, we’re all about seeing Michael Fassbender in action as the younger version of McKellen’s Magneto.
First Class gives us a true demonstration of his magnetokinesis, literally lifting a submarine from the depths of the ocean, depositing it on land. Strong as hell!

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) - 16th August
X-Men: Days of the Future Past is, in many ways, the glue of the X-Men franchise in linking all the movies together and, eventually, interweaving them into the larger MCU. While First Class was once deemed a reboot, the events of Days of Future Past were able to place the former retroactively as a prequel to the original X-Men movie, the latter functioning as a sequel to both First Class and the third X-Men movie, as well as a follow-up to The Wolverine (2013).
The most iconic scene of the film? Evan Peter’s cheeky Quicksilver breaking Magneto out of prison.

Logan (2017) - 19th August
Why does Hugh Jackman always want to leave us in tears? As if his role as Barnum wasn’t bad enough, in the final instalment in the Wolverine trilogy, he’s also made a complete mess of us. At least we’ll always have him gyrating with Ryan Gosling in Deadpool & Wolverine. A somewhat more sombre movie, Logan seems to close the chapter of what began in 2000 with the first X-Men movie, as we see both Professor X and Logan meet their ends.
Why is this considered as one of the scenes? It shows humanity within all the superpowers and action-packed scenes, clawing onto something relatable and raw, the final bittersweet moment when Laura, Logan’s daughter, adjusts the cross on his grave to create an X. Stunning.
