Here's some news that will blow you away: Twisters is really rather good. That's according to the critics who have praised the standalone sequel to the 1996 blockbuster movie Twister.
Daisy Edgar-Jones continues her rise to superstardom as haunted ex-storm chaser Kate who is lured back to her home state of Oklahoma. There, she falls in with a merry band of weather watchers who have devised a scheme to dissolve tornadoes and potentially save hundreds of lives. However, Kate finds herself more drawn to rogue 'tornado wrangler' Tyler (the irresistibly charismatic Glen Powell) whose outsized YouTube persona conceals sensitivity and a wealth of meteorological knowledge.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, helmer of the beautifully sensitive 2021 film Minari, Twisters capitalises on 21st-century CGI developments to put you in the heart of the storm like never before. (Be sure to see the film in special format IMAX, plus Cineworld-exclusive formats 4DX, ScreenX and Superscreen, for the full effect.)
Here's a smattering of reviews that should encourage you to seek out Twisters on the biggest Cineworld screen you can find.
"Twisters, thankfully, is a sequel that actually remembers the capable, rational scientist heroes of its Nineties predecessor," writes Clarisse Loughrey for The Independent. "It suggests Hollywood might finally come to its senses when privileging brawn over genuine smarts and expertise."
Writes Linda Marric for HeyUGuys: "A hugely entertaining and engaging white-knuckle ride. This is a cinematic experience with a soul, which blends adrenaline-fuelled excitement with classic romcom storytelling. The very definition of a must-see summer blockbuster."
"The concept of upgrading a tornado may seem like a strange one, but the sequel pulls it off with visual flourishes that range from terrifying to outrageously good fun," writes Beth Webb for Empire Magazine. "Steven Spielberg has an executive producer credit under his Amblin banner, and you can feel echoes of his work in the thrill of the thrashing rain and the ginormous, relentless cylinders of destruction as the human drama boils over below.
"All is captured on film, with the dark-grey wash of the storms balanced with lush greens and sunny hues while the weather pauses for breath."
The Telegraph's Robbie Collin garlands the film with a five-star review, raving: "A film many might have written off as a faintly desperate revival of an ageing blockbuster brand is in fact the most wholehearted, warm-blooded, meticulously crafted good time at the movies since Top Gun: Maverick."
