Chris Pratt isn’t yet confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, but his new science fiction thriller is coming out in 4DX and IMAX

It’s unclear whether or not Chris Pratt will reprise his role as Guardians of the Galaxy Star-Lord in Avengers: Doomsday. But if you’re feeling bereft without a new blockbuster with your favourite famous Chris, we’ve got good news. Chris Pratt is starring in a science fiction action thriller, Mercy, and it’s coming out on the 23rd January in both 4DX and IMAX.

Also starring Rebecca Ferguson, Detective Chris Raven (Pratt) finds himself on trial for the murder of his wife – and justice is being served by an advanced AI judge, Judge Maddox (Ferguson). Chris must prove his innocence within 90 minutes or face on the spot execution.

A tense, action-packed watch, here’s why you should watch it in 4DX and IMAX at Cineworld.

Feel like Chris Pratt in the 4DX hot seat

You’ll be sitting for 100 minutes watching Mercy, so why not get a little closer to the action and opt for a 4DX screening that’ll literally throw you directly into it. Chris Pratt’s character spends 90 minutes attempting to prove his innocence before he is put to death – and he actually sat in a real executioner’s chair while filming.

If that sounds a little sinister and eerie to you, you’re not wrong, but 4DX is also deemed extreme immersive cinema for a reason. Action packed, expect the whip of wind as a bullet sails past your ear, as well as water and life effects. The main event, though, is certainly the chair, which rumbles, jerks, and jumps to reflect all the action taking place on screen.

Filmed for IMAX, you must see Mercy on the biggest screen possible

Mercy isn’t just optimised for the best screen in cinema, it is one of the 2026 slate’s special Filmed for IMAX titles. This means it utilises IMAX technology from start to finish – from the cameras used to shoot to post-production optimisation.

Working closely with Timur Bekmambetov, director of Mercy, the film includes 62 minutes of IMAX’s exclusive Expanded Aspect Ratio. In simple terms, this offers a far bigger picture that allows you to get closer to the details, seeing 26% more of the original shot.

Given this is a movie about the future of technology, particularly AI, Mercy is deserving of the best cameras and processing powers in the business.

Watch Chris Pratt’s character take to the stand in real time in 3D

Mercy is being released in both regular 3D and IMAX 3D, with the movie progressing in real time as Chris Pratt’s character must defend himself and prove his innocence in just 90 minutes. And 3D will bring this time-pressed thriller into the room with you, with holograms floating into the room with you as the protagonist wades through evidence to allude execution.

Already a high-pressure film that’ll have you at the edge of your seat, 3D screenings offer a unique experience that allows you to feel like you’re right there with the characters, as well as making action sequences that bit more thrilling as things fly out from the screen.

Catch Chris Pratt's Mercy in 4DX, IMAX, IMAX 3D, and 3D from 23rd January.
