When it comes to matters of the heart, nothing can reflect the complexities of love quite like the movies. Whether it’s a tale about first heartbreaks or finding companionship in your later years, there’s just something about cinema that can help to make sense of it all (even if it’s just a chance to not look at Tinder for two hours).
This year has held on to that trend with some phenomenal romantic comedies. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy was the first out of the gate, and also the first movie I watched this year that had us blubbering in our seats. Even thinking about the Christmas pageant scene towards the end of the film has us wiping away a solitary tear.

On the other side of the equation, The Naked Gun really amped up the latter half of the rom-com mix by indulging in complete slapstick comedy. Pamela Anderson singing completely nonsensical freestyle jazz? Check. Liam Neeson fighting a snowman? Make that check a double. And who could forget the now iconic Buffy the Vampire Slayer rant? Not us.
Between these films and many more, 2025 has set a tough act to follow, but from what’s already on the 2026 calendar, it might be beaten…
Wuthering Heights
Kicking things off with the sauciest film of the bunch, there’s a good chance that you’ve already heard a thing or two about Emerald Fennell’s upcoming adaptation of the Emily Brontë classic. If there’s one thing that the acclaimed director has shown us in the trailer for the film it’s that this take on Wuthering Heights will be very different to anything that has come before it.
Anyone who’s read the novel will already know that the romance between Cathy and Heathcliffe is quite restrained, largely dictated by the class barriers thrust upon them. By comparison, the film seems to be incorporating some elements of the novel whilst amping up the desires between the two leads, and the fact that the creators have enlisted two Hollywood heartthrobs in Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie only means that we’ll all be fanning ourselves when the film drops.
Reminders of Him
Die-hard fans of Colleen Hoover won’t need reminding that this adaptation will soon be making its way to cinemas, but for the uninitiated out there, this is one love story that you won’t want to miss. Daring to dive into a world beyond ‘happily ever after’, Reminders of Him follows Kenna (Maika Monroe) as she has to recalibrate her life following the death of her boyfriend, caused by a car crash whilst she was at the wheel.
It’s quite a heavy set-up but it serves as a solid jumping off point for a story about the fleeting nature of love, whether there really is just one person out there who we’re meant to be with and what life looks like when they’re gone. You’ll definitely want to get the handkerchief ready for this one but with a cast including Tyriq Withers, Lauren Graham and Bradley Whitford, who could possibly say no?
Hamnet
Can you believe that it’s been nearly five years since visionary director Chloé Zhao last graced us with a new movie? Well, while Eternals followed a very different trajectory to what we’re used to seeing from Zhao, Hamnet is going back to her tried and true formula of character-driven drama that’s set apart from the crowd by excellent cinematography.
Inspire by the real-life marriage of William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway, and how they dealt with the death of their young son, Hamnet seems set to give us an opportunity to think about England’s most famous playwright not as the figure he came to be known as, but rather the man he was during his own time, with his own thoughts and feelings about the world and his dearly beloved. Keep your eyes locked on this one as it could be a frontrunner during the next set of awards shows.
The Drama
Very little is known about A24’s star-studded comedy drama as there’s only one trailer to speak of, but it does hint at plenty of secrets bubbling beneath the surface, just waiting to be discovered. Seriously, if you’ve ever complained about trailers giving away a little too much about the plot of a film then give the one for The Drama a watch as it does an incredible job of drawing you in without giving too much away.
All we can gather at this point is that the film will star Robbert Pattinson and Zendaya as Charlie and Emma, two young lovebirds on the cusp of getting married. Clearly something is amiss however as it seems as though their perfect wedding might be the destination of a big break-up. Whatever the film has in store, it’s sure to be one of next year’s hot topics just for the casting alone.
Sense & Sensibility
The story of the Dashwood sisters and their attempt to navigate the societal perils of class-driven Britain in the 19th century is a true classic, and while we’ve had some wonderful adaptations in the past, we reckon that enough time has gone by that we’re overdue a chance to experience this story once more on the big screen.
There is no trailer to speak of just yet but based on the casting of Daisy Ridley, Esmé Creed-Miles and George MacKay, we’re certain that it’s going to be an incredible time. With each new adaptation there’s always a chance to add something distinct, perhaps a different interpretation of certain scenes that helps to stamp a unique mark on the film, and if you haven’t experienced Sense & Sensibility in any form thus far then you’re in for a treat when this version drops.
