The classic X-Men films are essential viewing for Avengers Doomsday. Here’s why

In case you haven’t heard, all the classic X-Men films, from 2000’s X-Men to 2017’s Logan, are headed back to Cineworld for your viewing pleasure, and while it’s a great opportunity to remember why the series was such a staple of superhero cinema, these films are also essential viewing if you want to watch Avengers: Doomsday next year.

Without giving too much away, the final scene of Fantastic Four: First Steps, leads directly into Avengers: Doomsday. This makes sense as the fifth Avengers team-up is the next big MCU film slated for release (although it’ll be a good long wait before it debuts in December 2026).

Of course, if you haven’t yet seen Fantastic Four and you want to be caught up on all things Marvel then definitely catch that film whilst it’s still in cinemas. Even if you have seen it, you might have missed a ton of easter eggs that can only be caught during a second viewing.

Once you’ve had your fill of Marvel’s iconic quartet, the X-Men films need to be your next priority, and here’s why.

A cast unlike any other

If you’re a diehard Marvel fan then you’re probably already aware of the massive cast announcement that took place earlier this year for Avengers: Doomsday (and went somewhat viral for the fact that it lasted nearly five and a half hours). For those who haven’t yet seen it, the whole thing has thankfully been condensed into a roughly two-minute video which you can see below.

As you might expect, all of the major players are set to return including Florence Pugh and the rest of the Thunderbolts, all of the Fantastic Four and classic Avengers like Chris Hemsworth and Anthony Mackie. What no one anticipated was the surprise reveal that a good chunk of the X-Men cast would be returning.

We’re talking about the likes of Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden and more, all set to appear in an Avengers film. It’s enough to make our superhero-obsessed brains implode, not the least because it hints at long-awaited Avengers/X-Men team-up that we could once only dream of.

As of yet, we have no real idea as to how the X-Men will be incorporated into the story, but there is one film that shows us how it could be done.

The Deadpool & Wolverine template

Last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine was an absolute romp that didn’t shy away where violence and profanity are concerned, making it quite a departure from the usual tone of the MCU, but it did show us all how a multiversal team-up might work.

Within that film, not only did you have the titular foul-mouthed hero in red, but you had Wolverine, (the original) Human Torch, Blade, Elektra and X-23 plus many more heroes brought into the mix. It made for quite a spectacle, but it did rely on a decent amount of pre-existing superhero knowledge for the impact of it all to really sink in.

With that in mind, there’s no telling what parts of the X-Men storyline might be incorporated into Avengers: Doomsday, so it’s well worth catching these films while they’re back in the cinemas so that you're prepped and ready for what the next big MCU outing has in store.
