We're feeling the need for speed again with the announcement of Top Gun 3. Following the blazing success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, Paramount is now commissioning a threequel with star Tom Cruise again in the pilot's seat.
Not many details are forthcoming but The Hollywood Reporter indicates that co-writer Ehren Kruger and director Joseph Kosinski could also return to the fold. The news comes hot on the heels of Cruise's newly-announced package deal with Warner Bros, one that could produce the long-awaited Edge of Tomorrow sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick shattered box office records in 2022 and earned widespread critical acclaim with many declaring it as a superior sequel. The movie traced the generational fall-out between Cruise's daredevil yet ageing Maverick and a cadre of new Top Gun Academy recruits, chiefly Rooster (Miles Teller), the embittered son of Maverick's deceased former wingman Goose (Anthony Edwards).
It's suggested that Maverick and Rooster will be reunited and that Glen Powell's cocky Hangman will also be back. While we await official confirmation, Cruise finds himself occupied with production on Mission: Impossible 8, the follow-up to last year's bike-off-a-cliff extravaganza Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.
Christopher McQuarrie is once again at the helm and the movie will be released in 2025, having shifted its original 2024 position owing to the 2023 SAG-Aftra strike.
