We know what you’re thinking – or, rather, what you’re humming. And while Anaconda has nothing to do with the Nicki Minaj song (though they did make perfect use of it in the trailer), the new film starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd does seem ripe for capturing many a viral moment.

What is the plot of Anaconda?
Anaconda is a reboot of the 1997 film, but with a twist. Childhood friends Doug and Griff (played by Jack Black and Paul Rudd) were big fans of the film in their youth and set out on an adventure to the Amazon to create their own amateur version of the movie. However, things go from silly to serious real quick when a real giant anaconda slithers from the depths of the rain forest and sets site on the crew as its next meal.
Is Anaconda a reboot?
Anaconda is the best kind of reboot, because it’s brilliantly aware of what came before it. In short, it’s a meta-reboot, in which the characters in it are fans of the 1997 film directed by Luis Llosa, and seek to recreate it themselves.
Tom Gormican’s Anaconda joins a whole Anaconda series of films and TV series that were subsequently released following the 1997 original. While all involved different creative teams, from Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid – a stand-alone sequel to the 1997 film – it then pivoted to TV with David Olson’s Anaconda 3: Offspring and Anacondas: Trail of Blood.
One plot point remains central throughout, though: a giant, man-eating anaconda.
Anaconda release date
Anaconda is coming out in the UK on the 25th December, a perfect watch for that betwixmax (that’s, the time between Christmas and New Years, FYI!).

Nicholas Cage was originally rumoured to be in Anaconda (2025)
Development of Anaconda has been ongoing since January 2020, with Nicholas Cage’s name originally attached to the Tom Gromican movie. The cast was also rumoured to include Jennifer Lopez, Own Wilson, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight, the latter starring in the original 1997 film.
It could’ve been a very cool reunion given Cage has worked with Gromican before in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Alas, we’re very happy to see Jack Black and Paul Rudd leading the charge on this slithery extravaganza.
