What, like it’s hard? I picked my favourite moments in Legally Blonde ahead of its 25th Anniversary screening

Legally Blonde turns 25 this year. Cineworld is celebrating this milestone with some special screenings this summer.

Can you believe it’s been 25 years since Elle Woods first strutted onto cinema screens in a sea of pink?

That’s right. Legally Blonde is celebrating a major anniversary, and the beloved cult classic remains just as iconic today as it was in 2001. More than just a feel-good comedy, the film championed female empowerment, self-belief and staying unapologetically true to yourself, all while serving some unforgettable fashion moments along the way.

Reese Witherspoon delivers a career-defining performance as the endlessly lovable Elle Woods, bringing infectious charm, warmth and determination to the role. While the film may begin with heartbreak, Legally Blonde is ultimately not a romance story, it’s about a young woman discovering her worth.

To celebrate, we’re hosting some special anniversary screenings of Legally Blonde at Cineworld this summer on 29th May and 2nd June. Don’t sleep on this, you can book your tickets now! In the meantime, let’s relieve some of the most iconic moments of the film, shall we?

The break-up

Warner picks the worst possible moment to break up with Elle: over dinner in a swanky restaurant, just as she’s expecting a proposal. She wants nothing more than to be Mrs Warner Huntington III. “I need to marry a Jackie, not a Marilyn,” he tells her, leaving Elle completely heartbroken. She rushes out of the restaurant in tears. You feel devastated for her, but it also marks the moment that changes her life forever.

Getting into Harvard Law School

Determined to win Warner back, Elle hatches a plan to get into Harvard Law School and prove she’s more than the stereotypical blonde he sees her as. She submits an unforgettable video essay as part of her application, charming the admissions professors while showing off her impressive academic record. On her first day of class, Elle spots Warner in the hallway, who can’t believe she managed to get into one of the most prestigious law schools in the country. “What, like it’s hard?” she retorts. It’s one of the best lines in the film (and the kind of confidence we should all aspire to).

The bend and snap

As president of her sorority, Elle was always the go-to source of advice for her sisters, and she brings that same energy with her to Harvard. After befriending Paulette, the lovable manicurist played by Jennifer Coolidge, Elle takes it upon herself to help boost her confidence and catch the attention of the local delivery man. The legendary “bend and snap” is her solution, a move that supposedly has a “98% success rate of getting a man’s attention”, where you pretend to pick something up before dramatically snapping back into position. Before long, the rest of the salon is joining in. It’s hard to believe the scene almost didn’t make the final cut!

The costume party prank

When Warner’s new fiancée, Vivian, invites Elle to a costume party, she fully commits, because Elle Woods never does anything by halves. Dressed head to toe in pink, she arrives in a bunny costume, only to discover that Vivian has set her up and nobody else is dressed up. Humiliated but refusing to let it break her spirit, Elle handles the situation with surprising grace. It’s also a turning point for her character, as she begins to realise she will never fit the image Warner wants her to be, and that maybe she shouldn’t have to.

Elle’s flawless outfits

Speaking of pink, it’s practically Elle’s raison d’être. Her wardrobe is one of the film’s standout features, and Reese Witherspoon is serving look after look throughout the entire runtime. There are almost too many iconic outfits to count, from the leather skirt suit and the fluffy lilac coat to the back-to-school ensemble and, of course, the unforgettable pink courtroom power suit. The costume department truly outdid themselves.

Bruiser is always adorable

Who could forget Bruiser, Elle’s adorable chihuahua and constant companion? Whether she’s stepping onto the Harvard campus for the first time or making a big impression in the courtroom, Bruiser is always right by her side, usually tucked away in one of her handbags. Bruiser perfectly matches Elle’s personality: loyal, stylish and impossible not to love.

Being a badass lawyer

The film’s climactic courtroom scene arrives when Elle, having been removed from Brooke’s defence team by Callahan, takes it upon herself to question Brooke’s stepdaughter during the murder trial. As the cross-examination unfolds, Elle spots a crucial inconsistency in Chutney’s story involving hair perms, a detail only she would notice. It’s the breakthrough that allows Elle to crack the case.

From rivals to pals

From the moment Elle steps onto the Harvard campus, Vivian makes it clear she isn’t exactly her biggest fan. Their first encounter is painfully awkward, with Vivian embarrassing Elle in class before she drops an even bigger bombshell that she’s Warner’s new fiancée. Their rivalry becomes a recurring thread throughout the film, but as time goes on, Vivian begins to see Elle for who she really is: intelligent, determined and genuinely kind-hearted.

The graduation speech

Who doesn’t love an inspirational speech to close out a film? By the end of Legally Blonde, Elle has graduated from Harvard, secured a position at a prestigious Boston law firm and been chosen as the class speaker for the graduating class of 2004. In a perfect full-circle moment, her speech even calls back to the Aristotle quote from her very first class, proving just how far she’s come since arriving at Harvard. It’s the ultimate feel-good ending and the perfect conclusion to Elle’s journey.
