We’ve just got more positively precious news about Andy Serkis’ new Lord of the Rings film. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will serve as a prequel to the original trilogy, and it’s been confirmed we’ll see some of the original cast reprise their role, alongside Serkis as the titular character.
Ian McKellen is set to return as the iconic Gandalf, while Elijah Wood will return to our screens as the adventurous Hobbit, Frodo Baggins. Lee Pace will return as Thranduil.
And that’s not the only exciting casting news. Jamie Dornan is set to play the role of Strider, later revealed as Aragorn in Fellowship of the Ring. Other newcomers include Kate Winslet as Marigol and Leo Woodall as Halvard.

The script was also written by the original writers from the trilogy: Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, while Peter Jackson, who directed the original trilogy as well as The Hobbit film series, will co-produce alongside the two writers.

Are there any other Lord of the Rings films in the works?
New Line announced in May 2024 that two films were in development, working with Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens as producers on the two new live action movies. The first, of course, is The Hunt for Gollum. A second movie has also been announced, currently under the working title The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past.
The script for this is being written by Stephen Colbert and his son Peter McGee, as well as Boyens. It is said to focus on Chapter 3 through to Chapter 8 of The Fellowship of the Ring.
