No matter where you stand on reading the book first (or not), some great movies have started out as books, and filmmakers show no sign of stopping in adapting books for the big screen. Stephen King always has a book heading for the silver screen (there are multiple on this list), while we’ve also got more of Frank Herbert’s sandworms to look forward to in Dune.

Caught Stealing
Based on Charlie Huston’s book of the same name, it also turns out that he wrote the screenplay for the Darren Aronofsky film, so you can bet it’s pretty faithful to the original text. Starring Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, and a cat, Hank finds himself stuck in a sticky situation when he’s left to cat sit his British punk neighbour Russ, and a bunch of gangsters come looking for him.
The Long Walk
Stephen King’s novel is The Running Man (also by him) meets The Hunger Games in this story set in a dystopian America in which an annual competition sees young men attempt to walk continuously and be the last one standing to win anything they want for the rest of their lives. If they slow down below a certain speed or stop completely, they’ll be shot dead on the spot.

The Glenn Powell movie is the second film adaptation to come out of this novel and sees Ben Richards (Powell) enter a televised contest in which he will be hunted down in order to be killed. If he manages to outrun death, he’ll win mega bucks and be able to help his struggling family.

All our Hunger Games-Twilight crossover dreams have come true with Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson starring in this adaptation of a translated piece of literature by Argentine writer Ariana Harwicz. It’s described as a psychological comedy-drama in which a young couple make the move from NYC to Pattinson’s characters childhood home of Montana. Wicked: For Good (21st November)
The much-anticipated second instalment of the 2024 sensation is almost here with Act 2 of the hit musical. Did you know it was adapted from a book first by Gregory Maguire though (who based it on The Wizard of Oz, which was also a book before it was a film – are you following?)?
The Housemaid (26th December)
Freida McFadden is no stranger to a thriller, and the first novel in her Housemaid series is being turned into a movie with Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, and Michele Morrone. Millie has a colourful past that she wishes to hide from, taking up a position as a live-in housemaid with the Winchester family. While seemingly perfect, the Winchester family is not all as it seems, with dark secrets soon to be revealed.

Already causing something of a storm with Brönte evangelists, Emerald Fennell is dashing the classic with some of her movie magic, following on from the success of Saltburn and Promising Young Woman. Wuthering Heights stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Cathy and Heathcliff in what looks to be a rather raunchy take on the Gothic novel.
Dune 3 (18th December, 2026)
Drawing to a close the Denis Villeneuve adaptations, the third movie in the Dune trilogy arrives at the end of 2026 and will be based on the second book in Frank Herbert’s series called Dune Messiah.
