It’s hard to believe that Timothée Chalamet’s foray into one of Roald Dahl’s most prolific characters came out three years ago – he’s been Bob Dylan, Paul Atreides, and Marty Mauser in the meantime. But now Chalamet is set to reprise his role as the chocolate entrepreneur, with filming rumoured to be starting as soon as August this year.
Director Paul King confirmed Wonka 2 was in development as of November 2024 with half a script written at the time. And now film industry insider DanielRPK has suggested there’s a strong chance production will begin in August, with a 2027 release date looking likely.
This certainly works out well with Chalamet having wrapped Dune: Part 3 at the end of 2025, with no other projects currently underway.
What will the Wonka sequel be about?
While we know a script was halfway done back in 2024, it’s obviously too early to have any concrete details on the second Wonka movie. Of course, with 2023’s Wonka serving as a prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – the story by Roald Dahl that most will be familiar with – it’s likely Wonka 2 will be a continuation of how the chocolatier came to be the reclusive factory owner we met in the original 1971 film.
Who will be in the cast of Wonka 2?
It’s very early days. Timothée Chalamet is almost guaranteed to reprise his role as Willy Wonka, for what is Wonka without Timothée now? We hope to see Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa again.
More excitingly, though, are the rumours circulating that Chalamet could be reuniting with Saorise Ronan in the Wonka sequel, which would be the third film the pair would co-star in, following Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Little Women.
Has a Wonka 2 release date been confirmed?
Unfortunately, we don’t yet know when the second Wonka film will be released, though at some point in 2027 seems likely. There was speculation that it could be released on 17 December, 2027, with a placeholder from Warner Bros labelled “UNTITLED WB FAMILY SEQUEL”.
Since then, though, Andy Serkis’ The Hunt for Gollum has been announced to be releasing on this day. Unless we’ve got another Dune: Part 3/Avengers: Doomsday situation, then, it may be that the Wonka 2 sequel will come out on a different date.
