Celebrate Earth Day by going on a mission to save it with Ryan Gosling in Project Hail Mary and 3 other films

Earth Day falls on 22nd April every year. Typically, it’s a time to celebrate our world and make moves to better protect it. Just like Ryland Grace and Rocky do in the latest sci-fi blockbuster, Project Hail Mary. If you’re thinking about a way to celebrate Earth Day with a fitting movie, then, look no further. You can head to your local Cineworld cinema and watch Project Hail Mary right now, an instant crowd pleaser. And that’s not the only spacey sci-fi you can enjoy.

There are plenty of other sci-fi movies with heavy commentary on the state of the world and the environment to get locked into and prebook this Earth Day 2026.

Rocky Grace save stars…and so can you

The most fitting film to watch on Earth Day, first and foremost, has to be Project Hail Mary. I cannot understate how good this film is, and it certainly has Earth Day’s message at its heart: that we need to protect and conserve our beautiful planet.

In Project Hail Mary, high school science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up on the Hail Mary spaceship, suffering from amnesia and slowly having to piece together what lead to him being thousands of lightyears away from home. Slowly he remembers he must stop a mysterious cell, Astrophage, from destroying the sun’s energy.

It certainly feels like a mission that hits close to home in terms of discussions around climate change. But don’t worry, it’s definitely a feel good movie at its heart.

Celebrate the countdown to Disclosure Day with our Steven Spielberg Film Season

Steven Spielberg is no stranger to writing out of this world adventures. With his latest release, an original story written by him called Disclosure Day coming in the summer, Cineworld is celebrating the countdown with our very own Spielberg Season. And there’s plenty of films in the line-up that fit the bill of films about Earth, but more so space.

One such film is, of course, ET: The Extra-Terrestrial. I can’t explain it, but I just know if Rocky and ET met, they’d be best friends. Perhaps not as close as Rocky and Grace, but they’d be super cute.

While Elliot and Gertie weren’t saving the world so much as sharing their home with ET before getting him back to his own, this is still a beautiful movie about friendship. And the John Williams score is just magically transportative.

Can’t talk about sci-fi without talking about Star Wars

Is it about saving our Earth? Not exactly. But it does fit the bill of space, planets, and the like, right? So I’m going to say that you can celebrate Earth Day by booking tickets to see The Mandalorian & Grogu on the silver screen now. Coming out in all the special formats, this is the first time bounty hunter Din Djarin and his apprentice, Grogu, are taking to the big screen, and their next mission is to help protect and build the New Republic.
