1. Lilo & Stitch (showing now)
Disney's Hawaiian-flavoured 2002 animation Lilo & Stitch came toward the end of the studio's hand-drawn era and remains a popular hit thanks to its peppy visuals and offbeat characterisation, largely embodied via the dog-like alien Stitch. Marcel the Shell with Shoes on director Dean Fleischer Camp now gives the story a live-action twist, taking over from original helmer Chris Sanders (the man behind the recent animated hit The Wild Robot) to bring Stitch's story to a new generation.
2. How to Train Your Dragon (showing now)
Lilo & Stitch isn't the only animations getting a live-action kick in the pants in 2025. DreamWorks' hugely popular How to Train Your Dragon series has also being rendered in flesh and blood terms, starting with the very first entry. If you're dubious, feel assured by the fact that helmer Dean DeBlois is back behind the camera and composer John Powell is returning to adapt his stirring orchestral melodies. In the live-action role of the Viking-turned-dragon-rider Hiccup: The Black Phone breakout Mason Thames.
3. Elio (showing now)
Pixar enjoyed a return to form in 2024 with their blockbusting sequel Inside Out 2. Expectations are therefore high for their next project Elio, which is the story of an underdog kid with an active imagination who finds himself inadvertently beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide. Expect the usual eye-popping visuals and trenchant emotional lessons, topped off by a talented voice cast including Jameela Jamil and Zoe Saldaña.
4. Smurfs (from July 18th)
Paramount is taking those little blue creatures into its own hands with this latest reboot, which mixes animation with live action for a unique take on the Smurfs. With a streaming of big names lending their voices, Rihanna plays Smurfette, with James Corden, Nick Offerman, Daniel Levy, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, and others also signed on for the movie in which Smurfette must lead a rescue mission to get back Papa Smurf from the real world.
5. The Bad Guys 2 (from August 1st)
Wisecracking noir-riffing animated heist adventure The Bad Guys was a big hit for DreamWorks on its release in 2022. Now, the nefarious crew of miscreants is back, once again led by Sam Rockwell's rogueishly likeable pickpocket Mr. Wolf.
6. Freakier Friday (from August 8th)
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back, and this time there's a double body swap going on. Not exactly ideal timing with Anna trying to merge two families in the lead up to getting hitched.
7. Wicked: For Good (from November 21st)
The first part of the epic big-screen Stephen Schwartz adaptation Wicked hit our screens in 2024. Now, we get the climactic instalment in the story of Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) in Wicked: For Good. Will you be walking the yellow brick road back to Cineworld on its release?
8. Zootropolis 2 (from November 28th)
The utterly delightful Zootropolis was one of Disney's finest stand-alone animations in recent years. It explored a teeming, bustling metropolis inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, a tribal society built on predator and prey, which gave rise to all manner of terrific jokes and potent emotional undercurrents. Zootropolis 2 is set to pick up with plucky rabbit cop Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) who must go undercover with her sly fox sidekick Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) in Marsh Market to track down a mysterious reptile.
9. The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants (from December 26th)
Irreverent animated icon SpongeBob travels to the depths of the ocean to face off against the Flying Dutchman. Expect yet more off-the-wall humour as the Nickelodeon institution keeps on trucking in the wake of the previous hit SpongeBob films.
