James Gunn’s all-new DC Universe is expanding after it launched onto our screens last summer with David Corenswet’s Superman. Now it’s time for a bit of girl power as Superman’s cousin, the spirited, spiky Kara Zol-El, otherwise known as Supergirl, takes centre stage and – as the first trailer reveals – risks her life for a cause we can all collectively agree we believe in: saving Krypto the dog!
Milly Alcock was cast way back in January 2024. Flash forward over two years later and the first trailer has finally dropped with a pencilled in release date of 26th June. Until then, let’s dive into everything included in Supergirl’s first relatable, fierce trailer.
Sometimes superhero movies shouldn’t be about saving humanity, they should be about saving the dogs
Sure, there are seemingly more admirable acts of heroism like saving the Earth and humanity at large, but, let’s face it, we’re all a whole lot more worried about our pets seeing harm. (We’re mostly kidding…) That’s why the Supergirl trailer is utterly relatable in its reveal of the event that will trigger the rest of the film: when Krypto is shot by the Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Kara must hunt them down in order to find the anecdote before he dies within 3 days.
Forget ‘man’s best friend’, Krypto is ‘Supergirl’s best friend’.
David Corenswet will appear in the film as Superman
Yes, it’s official. David Corenswet will return in Avengers: Doomsday Supergirl.
David Corenswet was revealed to be featuring as Superman in Supergirl at the tail end of 2025, though we won’t know exactly how much until the film is released. Of course, Kara had some screentime in Superman, and it’s essential we see more of these two in order to pave the foundations for Man of Tomorrow, scheduled to be released in July 2027.
But fans will be delighted to have seen him in the first Supergirl trailer, where he seems to urge Kara to return to Earth with him and find some semblance of family. This, understandably, touches a bit of a nerve, considering all of Kara’s family back on the planet Krypton are dead. Moreover, she has memories of Krypton, where Superman does not.
While cousins, their older-younger-sibling dynamic will be a treat to see play out.
We got more insight into Jason Mamoa’s new character, Lobo
Jason Mamoa is no stranger to DC comic book characters. He previously played Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe. However, turning over a new leaf, Mamoa will portray Lobo – and the first full trailer gave us a better look at his character and the relationship he’ll have with Alcock’s character.
While Lobo doesn’t exist in the source material (the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) the trailer indicates his character could feature quite heavily in the film, adding a unique spin that fans the world over will be intrigued to see play out. Either way, Lobo looks like an absolute hoot of an antihero.
The women supporting women energy goes hard
While the poisoning of Krypto is what galvanises Kara into action, it is joining forces with Rutheye (played by Eve Ridley) to defeat the evil Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) that shines throughout the first Supergirl trailer.
Rutheye lost both her parents to the Krem and seeks Kara’s help to avenge their deaths, a sense of huge loss that Kara herself knows all too well. With Jimmy Ruffin’s “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?” playing in the background of the trailer, it’s a morose juxtaposition to Kara’s hardskinned humour.
We're so excited for the Supergirl trailer, and will be counting down the days until its release on the 26th June.
