Since joining the Cineworld team and looking after their blog, I’ve been writing all about the different formats you can go see the latest blockbusters in – but I’d yet to actually experience them first hand for myself. So I started with a 4DX screening of Jurassic World Rebirth this week, and it was as ridiculously fun as everyone was telling me.

Ever wanted a dinosaur to drool on you? In 4DX they will
Sounds gross? Kinda is. But one of the most effective things I found when experiencing Jurassic World Rebirth in 4DX was when water dripped from the ceiling. I expected the splashes and sprays of water, but I wasn’t ready for the eerie trickling down. From the droplets of a T-Rex leering over you to creeping down leaky tunnels. It definitely made watching the film all the more atmospheric.
The variation in water effects was pretty neat
The control over water overall felt quite impressive.I had expected it to be all one note, being sprayed in the face. But actually, yes, there were sprays, sure – which worked well when charting a boat to hunt the Mosasaurus – but there were also trickles and drops like rainfall, as well as more controlled mistings throughout that did well to capture the different climates we were journeying through with Zora, Duncan, Martin, and Dr. Henry Loomis; air humid, wading through snake-ridden waters.
I’m now so intrigued by the process of creating scents for 4DX
Cineworld, I need to know all your secrets. Throughout the movie, a musty, tropical sort of scent was wafted throughout the theatre, another sense drawing you into the equatorial setting where the remaining dinosaurs roam. And it just made me so curious about the process for choosing the scents. Is there a lab where we’re mixing potions to figure out what damp dinosaur smells like? How best to achieve notes of unwashed dinosaur hunters? Because I’m here for it and need to be involved in how this whole set-up works.
The seats put the extreme in 4DX Extreme Cinema
As well as water, wind, and atmospheric scents, 4DX screenings also quite literally throw you around in your seat. In 4DX screenings your seats move, and it’s actually so fun. It’s kind of like a mini rollercoaster, but slightly less belly flops. From vibrations as giant dinosaurs shook the ground stepping into the scene to hitting the surf in Reuben’s sailing boat and feeling like we were offroading in Martin's jeep. It was truly exhilarating, heart in your mouth stuff.
4DX is one of two formats exclusive to Cineworld in the UK, alongside ScreenX. You can also see films in IMAX and Superscreen at Cineworld, with some of the biggest moving releases getting the treatment. You can look forward to the likes of Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps screening in all these immersive, next level formats in July.
