Scream 5 completes filming: Kevin Williamson reveals official title

A slasher movie franchise comes full circle with the reveal of the Scream 5 title. The latest entry in the hugely successful horror series is named... wait for it... Scream, replicating the title of Wes Craven's classic 1996 chiller. It was the movie that kickstarted a wave of slasher spine-tinglers throughout the decade, but no other matched Craven's peerless blend of blood-curdling horror and rib-tickling meta humour.

Original Scream writer Kevin Williamson saluted the completion of principal photography with an Instagram post, in which he revealed the title of the new movie. He also championed directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who delivered the rollicking, Scream-aping comedy-horror Ready or Not in 2019.

This is the first Scream movie to be completed in the wake of Craven's death in 2015. Williamson posted: "I’m excited for you to return to Woodsboro and get really scared again. I believe Wes would’ve been so proud of the film that Matt and Tyler are making". He also praised the cast of new and familiar faces who have "come together to continue Wes’s legacy with the upcoming relaunch of the franchise that I hold so dear to my heart".

The new Scream film has generated significant attention for reuniting Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, all of whom starred in the first four films as Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley. Each of their characters has grappled with the psychotic Ghostface killer, an alter-ego adopted by several different people, all of whom with twisted motivations.

We can only imagine who Ghostface will be this time around. All of the different individuals have harboured a central link to Campbell's tormented Sidney, so surely that particular wellspring has run dry? Never say never in the world of Scream. The script this time comes from James Vanderbilt, no stranger to serial killer thrillers having written David Fincher's critically acclaimed true crime drama Zodiac.

The supporting cast includes The Boys' Jack Quaid, Don't Breathe's Dylan Minnette and In the Heights' Melissa Barrera. Could one of them be playing the killer? Or it is a cast member we haven't listed? Paramount and Spyglass Pictures are collaborating for Scream, which is due for release (at the time of writing) in January 2022.
