Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have every reason to start getting excited right about now, as there’s a brand-new movie from the franchise landing imminently. Yes, the all-action superhero blockbuster Thunderbolts comes soaring into Cineworld cinemas from May 1st – and tickets for this long-awaited instalment have already gone on sale! But what do we know about the movie, and why should you come and see it? You’re about to find out…
It features some Marvel favourites
While Thunderbolts doesn’t include all of the best-known Marvel characters – to see people like Thor, Doctor Doom and Captain America, you’ll have to wait for Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 – it does feature some well-known faces. You’ll see Red Room assassin Yelena Belova (played by the ever-brilliant Florence Pugh), stealth expert Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), fighter extraordinaire Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and shadow warrior The Void (Lewis Pullman), not to mention super-soldiers Bucky Barnes, U.S. Agent and Red Guardian (Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell and David Harbour respectively). That’s quite a team!
The plot sounds really interesting
There hasn’t been a lot of information about the Thunderbolts storyline, but from the bits and bobs we have heard, it sounds really exciting. By the sound of it, our group of anti-heroes are sent on a deadly mission by CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus). However, it turns out to be a trap, leaving this ragtag team to confront their darkest secrets in order to survive. We’re intrigued to know what those secrets might be, and how they’ll be used to form an escape plan!
It features some universal themes
Superhero films obviously require you to suspend your disbelief to a large extent, and Thunderbolts will be no exception. However, the movie also draws upon themes that may resonate with some people. “You’re talking about a group of characters that have done a lot of bad things, and maybe are struggling with feeling good about themselves,” director Jake Schreier told Empire. “There’s an element that does speak to mental health, and loneliness, and how some of the darkness that we experience in our lives can’t be necessarily fixed, but can only really be made lighter through connection and finding others.”
It's been likened to some classic movies
You might expect a movie like this to be compared with other superhero films, but Schreier threw a curveball during a recent interview, mentioning Thunderbolts in the same breath as three entirely unexpected titles. Discussing his inspirations for the movie, he told Empire: “I had Toy Story 3 in there. It wasn’t as focused on a genre as much as dynamics amongst characters. They all have that dynamic of a team that is thrown together. That [furnace] sequence works so well because you’ve come to care about these characters so much. Can they get out of the trash can together?”
He added: “It’s exciting to think of movies like Ronin or Reservoir Dogs, where you have a group of people that has no reason to trust each other. Could they even learn to work together? What sort of conflicts would arise?”
It's showing in Cineworld’s premium formats
One of the most exciting things about Thunderbolts is that it’ll be available to watch in Cineworld’s premium formats – 3D, IMAX / IMAX 3D, 4DX, ScreenX and Superscreen.
IMAX combines next-generation remastering and dual projection with heart-pounding audio to deliver a cinema experience that’s breathtaking in every way. 4DX marries thrilling seat movement with realistic multi-sensory effects – from wind and water to strobe lighting and smells – to thrust you right into the heart of the movie. Superscreen’s eye-popping visuals and crystal-clear audio will turn every frame of this Marvel blockbuster into a masterpiece. And ScreenX offers a 270-degree viewing experience to put you right there in the heart of the scene.
Whichever one of these you choose, you’re guaranteed a next-level movie-watching experience that’ll you’ll never forget.
