We may all be excited about the prospect of a fifth Shrek movie coming in 2027, but there’s even more Shrek-related news on the horizon. Expanding the franchise and world of Far, Far Away, Shrek’s noble steed, Donkey, voiced by Eddie Murphy, is getting his own standalone film.
Universal announced that a standalone Donkey film will be released on 30 June, 2028 – just a two year wait for this upcoming family movie. The Donkey film will reportedly delve into the titular character’s origin story before he befriended the beloved ogre we know and love.
Eddie Murphy is set to reprise his role voicing our waffle-loving Donkey, while Charlie Bean, known for The Lego Ninjago Movie alongside The Bad Guys director Matt Flynn.
Not the first character from the Shrek fairytale universe to get his own spin-off, Puss in Boots got not one but two feature length films in 2011 and 2022 respectively.
A Donkey-centric film, then, is long overdue.
Speaking about the franchise, Eddie Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’ve always said I would do Shrek forever,” the star said at the time. “Donkey is a great character to play. I love the whole cast. So I was excited when it was like, ‘Hey, they’re doing another one,’ and they want to do a Donkey one, too. I’m totally into it.”
Eddie Murphy also revealed, in an interview with Screenrant, that work begins on the Donkey movie in September, sharing that they’re “still in the booth” recording dialogue for Shrek 5.
