What is the plot of Eddington?
Cast your mind back to May 2020, in the thick of the Covid-19 pandemic. Across the pond, it was all kicking off, too, with Eddington taking place in a small American town in which a sheriff – played by Joaquin Phoenix – and its mayor (Pedro Pascal) come to blows. A satirical dark comedy that swirls in conspiracy theories with social justice protests and the controversial implementation of lockdowns and the mandatory mask wearing of the time.

Ari Aster actually wrote Eddington before Hereditary and Midsommar
Ari Aster made a name for himself with his horror movies Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019) before working with Joaquin Phoenix for the first time in his 2023 movie Beau Is Afraid. It turns out that he had ideas for a contemporary Western long before all of these, though, and actually tried to get it made for five years before ultimately going on to make his other movies first.
