With the first trailer of The Mandalorian and Grogu dropping, there’s no better time than now to remind yourself of the story so far, with three seasons of the TV show to catch up on ahead of the movie’s release on 22nd May, 2026.

Watch the first official trailer below of the upcoming Disney movie, let out a sigh of relief that soon Pedro Pascal will be back on our screens, and read on for a full overview of the story so far.

Season 1 of The Mandalorian

Din Djarin, is a Mandalorian bounty hunter who is instructed by an Imperial remnant who goes by “The Client” to capture a 50-year old infant who’s the same species as Yoda, which he names “The Child”. His payment? Beskar steel that is very valuable to his people.

Instructed to bring back the child in one piece, the Mandalorian heads to the target’s last reported location and has to shoot a IG-11 droid which has been programmed to clear an encampment and, in turn, kill the child.

The Mandalorian journeys back to deliver the child, but they face obstacles along the way. In one pivotal instance, the child uses the Force to help defend the Mandalorian who is being attacked by a rhinoceros-like creature, the Mudhorn.

The Mandalorian adheres to his side of the deal and delivers the child to the client on Navarro and collects his 20 bar reward of beskar steel. The Mandalorian is curious about what plans are in store for the child, but proceeds to carry on with his life, using the beskar steel to replace and upgrade his amour, then agreeing to take on another job.

However, the guilt soon eats away at him and he seeks out the child, discovering the child is being tested on by scientist Dr. Pershing. He chooses to break the bounty hunter code and rescues the child.

The pair go on the run from the Bounty Hunters’ Guilt and Imperial forces, supported by other Mandalorians. It is towards the end of the first season that we meet the main antagonist in the story, Moff Gideon, a former Imperial officer who knows Grogu’s name. While Djarin manages to defeat his TIE Fighter, it is revealed Gideon is in possession of the Darksaber, an ancient relic of the Mandalorian people.

Season 2 of The Mandalorian

He is given a quest by his Armourer to return Grogu to the Jedi, who might train him, which is where the second season takes us. It is revealed, when meeting Jedi Ahsoka Tano, that Grogu has grown an emotional attachment to the Mandalorian, and so she refuses to train him. Instead, they head to the Jedi Temple so Grogu can find another Jedi willing to train him.

Here, however, Grogu is captured by Gideon’s people. Djarin’s ship is attacked, and this is where he joins forces with Boba Fett and Fennec Shand in order to go after Grogu.

The three successfully board Gideon’s ship and retrieve Grogu, with Djarin defeating Gideon in combat and taking over ownership of the Darksaber, which Djarin considers giving to Bo-Katan in order to liberate the Mandalorian.

They are left surrounded by the Dark Troopers but are soon saved by the arrival of Luke Skywalker, whom Grogu had contacted. It is then decided Grogu will go with Luke and R2-D2 to carry out his training.

The Book of Boba Fett

In spin-off series, The Book of Baby Fett, Djarin and Grogu are eventually reunited. While Djiarin must redeem himself for removing his helmet by bathing in the living waters in the mines of Mandalore, Grogu is given an ultimatum. Grogu can either become a Jedi and stay with Luke Skywalker, or return to the Mandalorian. He chooses the latter.

Season 3 of The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian is able to find redemption by returning to the planet of Mandalore and bathing in the living waters.

Throughout the third season, Djarin works with Bo-Katan to unite their people and bring about liberation of Mandlore, taking it back from Moff Gideon. In its conclusion, Gideon is defeated, and Djiarin officially adopts Grogu as his son and apprentice, with the two riding off into the sunset… sort of.

Between The Mandalorian and Grogu and Ryan Reynolds joining the Star Wars family in the 2027 movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, we can barely contain ourselves.
