Gotham City takes over Liverpool location for James Gunn’s next DC Universe instalment

After the world was left enthralled by James Gunn’s first feature length movie in the all-new DC Universe, everyone’s eyes have gravitated towards what’s next. While Supergirl will be released first in June of next year, the other upcoming DC Universe movie Clayface is currently in the spotlight as filming is underway in the UK.

Proving a hotspot for blockbuster movies at the moment, Liverpool follows in the footsteps of Glasgow where Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been shooting this past summer. Images surfacing online have shown areas of Liverpool being transformed into Gotham City for Clayface, which is currently set to be released on 11th September, 2026.

Liverpool’s crown court and Derby Square were infiltrated with American news vans adorning the Gotham News crest, as well as cop cars, bikes, and ambulances.

The Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts were transformed into Gotham City hospital, while Liverpool Central Library became Gotham City Crown Court.

Elsewhere, Gotham City post boxes, newspapers, and graffiti have taken over the streets of Liverpool.

Newspapers may have even given us a first look at Clayface himself.

As well as its set taking over Liverpool, some of the stars of the film have also been spotted, including a bandaged Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, otherwise known as Clayface.

Both Eddie Marsan and Max Minghella have also been spotted on set, the latter set to play a Gotham City police detective who is dating Naomi Ackie’s character, the scientist responsible for creating Clayface.

Liverpool was previously used as a filming location for Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, with the film’s production designer James Chinlund telling the BBC Liverpool helped to “[Create] a real, authentic-looking Gotham” thanks to its “immense architecture that was Gothic, that we could put our visual effects on top of.”

All these new details from the film set are certainly creating a buzz for what's in store for the DC Universe.

Be right back, rewatching Superman for the tenth time!
