How action movies are keeping our finger on the trigger for more explosive sequels

When attention spans are dwindling and our brains are seeking constant instant gratification, it’s hardly surprising that action movies continue to be a big hit. Well, that’s the academic answer of why we love action movies, anyway. Let’s face it, we also just love seeing things blowing up and lean actors trying to wrangle their way out of sticky situations with a time constraint ticking over them.

It’s gripping, it’s tense, and it offers plenty of opportunity for some epic stunts in ridiculously cool locations. That’s why Cineworld is bringing back some of the most iconic action movie sequels. The Thrill Seekers II film line-up sees Bad Boys II, Die Hard 2: Die Harder, The Bourne Supremacy, and Aliens return to the big screen this September. Book your tickets below and read on as we delve into why we come back to action movies time and time again.

Jaw-dropping stunts and car chases

Is it really an action movie if there are no car chases? Watching movies is all about seeing the impossible made possible through the magic of film, and the survival rates of some of the most iconic stunts and car chases definitely seem higher than likely – but holy moly are they epic.

The Miami’s MacArthur Causeway car chase in Bad Boys II will go down in history, not least because it features some pretty nice wheels, namely a $300,000 Ferrari, driven by Marcus and Mike (Martin Lawrence and Will Smith). With shooting showdowns, a lorry transporting cars commandeered by the gangsters, and Gabrielle Union driving a Range Rover without a driver’s door – it’s all kinds of destructive.

Unreal, out of this world filming locations

A lot of the time, where action movies are concerned, it's all about what’s going on in the forefront, but that doesn’t mean the background can’t be exceptional. The world is quite literally a director's oyster, and action films often depict some pretty incredible locations that many of us can only dream of traveling to.

In Bourne Supremacy, the film was shot across a number of locations including Goa in India, and in Russia’s capital city, Moscow. A dramatic location to match the dramatic goings-on on screen? We think, yes! Bourne Supremacy opens with Bourne living in Goa with his girlfriend, Marie, still suffering from amnesia. They have to make an abrupt exit, though, when a hit is put out on him – and yes, there’s another car chase. Throughout the action, you do get to see Goa through the dust and exhaust fumes, though!

It’s low stakes, short term stress

Life is full of enough stressors; who wants to watch something that gets your blood pressure pumping even more? Except that’s exactly what we want from films, especially action movies. Often these movies are filled with tense moments where characters are put into life or death situations, and we’re on the edge of our seats wondering whether they’ll make a narrow escape or not. Essentially, it’s low stakes for us and a great way to escape from the things that actually might be stressing us out in real life.

Of course, we can’t talk about action movies without talking about Die Hard. Die Hard 2 is returning to Cineworld this month, and it’s a perfect example of low stakes, short term stress. Think about it. It’s the second movie in a franchise that totals five movies, AKA our guy Bruce Willis defies the odds and survives every time, and thrills us in the interim.

There are no limits to action

While there are typical conventions always found in an action movie, you can take those conventions and put them in to just about any scenario. Powerful fight scenes with terrific showdowns, explosions and pyrotechnics, and a hero you want to root for. All that can be found in the 1986 movie, Aliens, which isn't simply a action movie but also 100% glorious sci-fi.

Starring Sigourney Weaver, Aliens takes place on a shuttlecraft in space where Weaver's character is asked to investigate planet LV-426  where a human colony is said to live. All they find though is one sole survivor, a 9-year-old girl. They later discover the colonists are being used as hosts by the aliens, with epic fight scenes ensuing, including a particularly iconic face off between ripley (Weaver) and the Alien Queen.
