It's murder on the dancefloor but we're not invoking Sophie Ellis-Bextor or Saltburn. No, we're welcoming everyone's favourite killer doll M3GAN back to the big screen in M3GAN 2.0.
Having cut a rug in the satirical 2023 horror-comedy smash, the humanoid android companion is back to have her vengeance – and she's going harder than Russell Crowe in Gladiator.
Here's an appropriately lurid teaser video showing us how the newly revived M3GAN is strutting her stuff.
How, exactly, has M3GAN come back to life following the events of the first movie? No doubt the returning creatives, comprising director Gerard Johnstone, screenwriter Akela Cooper and producers James Wan and Jason Blum, will be on hand to explain everything.
For now, here's a ploy synopsis taken from the movie's official website: 'Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.
Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.
With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I b***h is about to meet her match.'
One word: NO! Bad idea – the end of the first film indicated that M3GAN had evolved into some kind of smart house, so maybe this will play a part in the storyline.
Once again, the combination of Donald's physical movements and Davis' deceptively childlike tones promise to unleash a yarn that is campy, terrifying and riotous in equal measure.
M3GAN 2.0 is released on June 27th. If that seems too far away, remind yourself as to how M3GAN memed her way to iconic status.
