MaXXXine director Ti West on why the big-screen experience feels interactive

Mia Goth has killer instincts in the outrageous and entertaining throwback slasher movie MaXXXine. The movie is the third (and reportedly final) part in director Ti West's horror trilogy that has encompassed X (2022) and Pearl (2023).

Set in the 1980s, the movie picks up with Goth's character Maxine Minx as she navigates the seedy world of Tinseltown. There's also a black-gloved serial killer on the loose – one of many knowing horror nods amid a pulsating, neon-infused pastiche.

This is all a hallmark of Ti West's style: from early in his career with the likes of House of the Devil (2009), he has always paid homage to the rich history of horror. We caught up with him to discuss his working relationship with Mia Goth and his desire to utilise filmmaking language, from the colour palette to the soundtrack, to its fullest extent, in the process of crafting a truly interactive, big-screen experience.
