Two different generations must band together to fight the Ghostface killer in the upcoming Scream. The fifth movie in the hugely successful horror franchise, Scream confusingly shares its name with the late Wes Craven's original 1996 shocker. Nevertheless, we're getting primed for another onslaught of hip pop-culture gags, bloody mayhem and chilling revelations.
Legacy is key to the impact of the latest Scream movie, as evinced by returning cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette. All three are veterans of the terrifying Scream franchise, having been there since the beginning in their roles as Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley, respectively.
Sidney's tormented backstory has been key to the motivation of each Ghostface killer, so we wonder what family history could possibly be raked over in the new movie. Together with Gale and Dewey, Sidney will be advising a new generation of youngsters on how to stay alive as the mysterious Ghostface embarks on another murderous rampage. Here are some suitably nostalgic new legacy posters teasing the return of the original trio.
Scream is the first movie in the series to be made in the wake of Craven's death. The responsibility now falls to Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the helmers of the terrific 2019 horror-comedy Ready or Not. That movie can be seen as the ideal dry run for Scream, seeing as it also involves plenty of gallows humour and self-aware terror.
Original Scream writer Kevin Williamson has been acting as a consultant on the movie, so we can hopefully expect some level of thematic and emotional continuity with what has come before. The bright young cast includes Melissa Barrera (In the Heights), Jack Quaid (The Boys), Dylan Minnette (13 Reasons Why) and more. We're already speculating which of the newcomers will be the killer – assuming, of course, that one of the original cast members hasn't psychotically snapped owing to multiple run-ins with Ghostface...
Scream promises to be a right big-screen carve-up when it's released in Cineworld cinemas on 14th January 2022.
