After discovering the official title of the second Super Mario movie a few months ago, Nintendo finally dropped the first full trailer for Super Mario Galaxy Movie – and holy moly, it looks like so much fun!
From a star-studded cast to new, beloved characters on board for the latest video game adaptation, the trailer also features a whole load of references to Super Mario video games that are sure to have gamers and film fans alike fizzing at the mouth. Less chat, we need to get into dissecting this epic trailer.
Watch it below and read on for all the super cool details we noticed.
A shrunken Bowser is…painting?!
Following his defeat in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, Bowser is shrunken down and the trailer opens with him painting in his teeny tiny castle. His paintbrush wielding pastime proves to be a hint to the villain of the sequel’s story, with Bowser Jr. setting out to free his father.
Bowser’s paintings featured so many easter eggs
Obviously everyone on the internet is talking about that one Bowser painting. Yes, we’re talking about the portrait of Princess Peach and a particularly ripped Bowser. But his paintings also featured other elements from the Mario franchise, including a skeleton Mario, Boo, and the smiling flowers from Yoshi’s Island.
This is Mario’s Galaxy, we’re just living in it
We knew there had to be at least some nods to the game Mario Galaxy given the title of the film. And nods there were! From Mario and Princess Peach seen jumping through a star portal to the badass appearance of Rosalina at the end of the trailer as she takes on a familiar boss, Megaleg, with an epic rendition of “Gusty Garden Galaxy” tinkering in the background.
Christopher Nolan, eat your heart out – Mario Odyssey is here
Like we said, there are game references aplenty, and one of Nintendo's more recent games, Mario Odyssey, makes an appearance as two hooded figures (presumably Mario and Luigi) ride on motorbikes through sand dunes towards an inverted pyramid, which we also see in the open world of the Nintendo Switch release.
Peach takes on Ninji – and it’s serious girl power vibes
Petition to rename the movie as Princess Peach and Rosalina Galaxy, because the girls are taking over. We see Peach throwing her weight around with her umbrella, taking out some Ninji first appearing in Super Mario Bros. 2. So vintage. That’s on top of what could be another Super Mario Bros. Wonder/Sunshine reference with the casino arena she battles them in.
Bowser Jr. has had an upgrade
Okay, King, we see you! Bowser Jr. first features in Super Mario Sunshine, but he’s got a new look as the presumed villain in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Infact, he’s given punk with his electric purple and green aesthetic and illuminating bandana. We also clocked his paintbrush weapon of choice morphs into a morning star on a chain, which is…pretty chic. And let’s not forget that Bowser Jr. is being voiced by Benny Safdie, whose previous credits include Oppenheimer and Licorice Pizza.
Brie Larson will voice Rosalina
Rosalina’s moment towards the end of the trailer was so good that, hell yes, we’re going to talk about it twice. Following the title card for Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Roslina leaves Princess Peach’s castle, looking a lil shifty, we’ve got to say.
She runs into the aforementioned Megaleg boss, but Rosalina is nonplussed. She effortlessly goes to battle with the robot utilising her star magic. And while we don’t hear her speak in the trailer itself, it was revealed in the Nintendo Direct that she will be voiced by Academy Award winning Brie Larson.
Who is in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie cast?
Brie Larson and Benny Safdie join an already incredibly starry cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Charlie Day as Luigi. Jack Black voices Bowser.
What is the release date of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie?
There’s still a bit of time until the second Super Mario movie is released, which means more trailers are sure to be released for our dissection in the meantime.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to be released on the 3rd April, 2026.
