Could this be the movie that gets Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson his very own Oscar? Many are speculating a nomination could at least be on the cards for his portrayal of mixed-martial arts and UFC champion Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine. If that isn’t an incentive to book and see this on the biggest screen possible, we don’t know what is. Let’s face it, how else are you going to fit all his muscles into one shot?
The Smashing Machine is a little over a week away from being released in the UK on 3rd October, and Cineworld is releasing it in its Superscreen special format. If we haven’t yet convinced you seeing it in this special format is a must, here are three more reasons to clinch those cinema tickets.

Dwayne Johnson’s role in The Smashing Machine is like no other he’s done before
Dwayne Johnson is known for his roles in outlandish, thrilling action movies, silly comedies, and a kid movie or two. Serious acting isn’t exactly synonymous with The Rock – but that’s no bad thing! Look, someone’s got to play the Tooth Fairy – and we all absolutely adore Maui from Disney’s Moana. (Anytime someone thanks us for doing something, we still sing back, “You’re welcome!”)
That said, there have been some serious roles thrown in there, including in San Andreas and Snitch. None seem quite so demanding and intensive as The Smashing Machine, though. In this biopic of Mark Kerr’s life, Dwayne Johnson will depict the high highs and lowest lows of Kerr’s professional career, including his opioid addiction. The role could very well be the most intense and dramatic for Johnson yet.
The Smashing Machine cast as a whole is so impressive
Yes, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, who will play Mark Kerr’s then-wife Dawn Staples, are big names, and we can’t wait to see them in The Smashing Machine. But can we talk about the rest of the cast? It’s not all actors playing a glorified game of make-believe. The Smashing Machine also stars Bas Rutten, as himself, a former martial artist, kickboxer, and pro wrestler. Other real life talent includes Oleksandr Usyk as Igor Vovchanchyn. Usyk is a Ukrainian professional boxer and is the current undisputed heavyweight champion.
In fact, most of the cast consists of actual professional fighters in one discipline or another. And, of course, we can’t forget Dwayne Johnson is also a professional wrestler in his own right, which will be interesting to see play out theatrically beyond the realms of WWE.
You can be sure, then, that the fights that play out on screen are going to be beautifully choreographed, so much so that they’ll feel brutally real and all the more impactful.
