Bateman takes us through his morning routine in American Psycho (7th & 8th October)

Patrick Bateman’s proclivity towards violent homicide lends itself to many disturbing yet brilliant scenes playing out in the book to screen adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho. Introducing Bateman as a character is so effectively done in the scene in which he goes through his meticulous morning routine. From the lingering shots of his pristine, monochrome apartment to Christian Bale’s narration as he lists off all the different skincare products he uses, concluding with the peeling off of a mask that symbolises the double life he leads. It’s simple but sinister.

A film that sets out to explore religion, rebellion, and forbidden power given the family depicted are outlawed from their Puritan settlement, the penultimate scene seems to bring this all to fruition. Thomasin is the only surviving member of her family after horrific events lead her and her family to turn on each other. At this moment, she discovers the devil lives within the family goat, Black Philip, who propositions her with an all too tempting offer: “Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?” Agreeing, this proceeds the final scene in which Thomasin joins the coven of witches, naked, in the forest, and proceeds to levitate while laughing manically.

We first meet Emily in the Corpse Bride (11th, 12th & 15th October)

Moving away from the outright chilling, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (2005) is a decidedly less scary, more charming watch that all ages can enjoy. But what stands out as one of the best scenes we can’t wait to see during this year’s Horror Film Season? It has to be when we first meet Emily, the Corpse Bride in question. When Victor scurries away into the forest to practice his vows to his fiancé Victoria, he places the ring on a branch which turns out to be Emily’s skeletal hand, with the rest of her body rising from the snow, her veil across her face a là Raffaelle Monti’s Veiled Vestal Virgin in a beautiful piece of animation.

Ghosts enter the lighthouse in The Fog (13th October)

What’s scarier than death? Vengeful, killing ghosts, of course. In The Fog, the ghosts of fishermen purposefully killed on a clipper ship, return to take the lives of six people, representing the six that played a part in their own demise. Travelling as a supernatural fog, a standout scene from this horror movie sees the sentient fog closing in on radio DJ Stevie, who hosts her show from the top of the lighthouse. Already an incredibly isolated area up in the clouds, the closing in of the fog as the ghosts materialise makes it all the more claustrophobic.

Constantine makes a deal with the Devil (18th October)

Who knew Satan was just a man in a white suit? Well, that’s what we learn in Constantine when John (Keanu Reeves) strikes a deal with Satan himself. Peter Stormare plays Satan – or Lucifer – seemingly normal if not for the black substance dripping off his feet and the somewhat reptilian mannerisms. In the scene Constantine convinces Lucifer to stop time in order to intervene and prevent Mammon’s destruction. Gabriel attempts to smite Lucifer and in turn learns Gabriel has lost God’s favour with Lucifer burning their wings and banishing Mammon into hell. The special effects are incredible, the culmination of the scene in which Lucifer attempts to then drag Constantine into hell both epic and comical.

The Descent put the ‘creepy’ in creepy crawlers (25th October)

Six women go caving with one of the group admitting she has knowingly led the group into an unexplored cave system. Honestly, maybe she should be the one killed first? That isn’t the case though. While trying to find an exit, the group first encounters the creatures living inside the caves, which they christen the “crawlers”. The first time we as viewers get to see them too, they appear as a pale humanoid monster with a pig-like nose and sharp teeth, which we later see put to use when one of the group falls and breaks her legs only to be eaten by a crawler.

Freddy Krueger hijacks the school bus (29th October)

The return of Freddy Krueger, any sequel with a character as recognised as Freddy is going to see audiences anticipating that first glimpse. That’s why the opening sequence of Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge has to be our pick for the best scene in this movie. Jesse, who will later be possessed by Krueger, is on the bus to school when things go decidedly off road, taking a sharp left into nightmarish. Before Krueger is fully revealed, we see his hand on the gear stick with that iconic black and red striped T-Shirt and the silhouette of his hat before the full terror is revealed for the bus’ passengers.
