At the end of the month you can be rollin’ with the homies as Cineworld celebrates 90s teen classic Clueless turning 30 years old. Cheers for making us feel old over here. On June 30 you’ll be able to head to your local Cineworld and watch Clueless when it returns to the big screen in honour of its big anniversary.
But Clueless isn’t the only absolutely iconic movie celebrating 30 years since its release – as if! No, there are a ton of pretty big titles entering their third decade, as well as some other notorious culture moments celebrating the big three oh. Book your tickets for a throwback screening of Clueless and read on for more 30th anniversary celebrations.
Toy Story
It's been 30 years since we were first introduced to Woody and Buzz and the rest of Andy's toys. The second highest grossing film of 1995, Toy Story was also a landmark as the first feature length computer-animated movie, not just from Pixar but the industry as a whole.
GoldenEye
GoldenEye was the 17th movie to come out within the James Bond franchise, but it was Pierce Brosnan's first as the iconic M16 agent. He was the fifth actor to play the Ian Flemming character and went on to star in a total of four 007 movies before Daniel Craig took over the role.
Casper
For a lot of 80s and 90s kids, Casper was the one of many weird animated characters we experienced romantic feelings for – or is that just us? Eddie Redmayne did famously say he had a crush on Nala from The Lion King as a child, so we think not!). Casper the Friendly Ghost's relationship with Kat was a whole dang moment, and this film also turned 30 this year.
Jumanji
It feels only right that Robin Williams should feature somewhere in this list, featuring heavily in the movies millenials lapped up in their childhoods. Sunday afternoons spent watching Channel 5 guaranteed a Robin Williams feature, with the 1995 original of Jumanji also starring Kirsten Dunst, David Alan Grier, Bonnie Hunt, Jonathan Hyde, and Bebe Neuwirth.
Babe
One of those movies with quotes we can still conjur to this day – and live on in later movies like Shrek ("That'll do, Pig/Donkey, that'll do"), this was also another classic Channel 5 showing on a Sunday. A movie about a pig with a big adventure might sound naff, but it was amazing, and it actually scooped up a Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy, so there.
Apollo 13
Before you had sand worms and lightsabres, you had films about real life excursions into space, with Apollo 13 (released in, you guessed it, 1995) charting the story of the aborted 1970 lunar mission that saw oxygen tanks explode. Starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, and Kathleen Quinlan, they played the roles of real life astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, Fred Haise, and Ken Mattingly.
Braveheart
You can't talk about film and not talk about the winner for Best Picture at the Oscars. This one goes to Mel Gibson's Braveheart, which he both directed, produced, and starred in as the Scottish warrior.
Sense and Sensibility
The Jane Austen adaptation also featured heavily in the awards circuit that year and, 30 years on, it just goes to show we never tire of a retelling, with Austen's books continously adapted for the screen over and over again. This one stars nations treasure Emma Thompson, who also wrote the screenplay, Kate Winselet, Hugh Grant, and the late Alan Rickman. Oh, and Emma won Best Actress at the Oscars for this!
Pocahontas
If we're going to mention Pixar, we should probably also meantion a Disney Animated Classic, especially as the 90s was widely considered its renaissance following the release of The Lion King in 1994. And what Walt Disney Studios choose to follow the Hamlet retelling up with? The gorgeous Pocahontas, which includes some true Disney bops, including 'Just Around the Riverbend' and 'Colors of the Wind'.
And just for fun...
What else turns 30 in 2025?
Obviously these films were all, in their own right, huge cultural moments. But some other things came out in 1995 that are equally worthy of saying happy birthday to! The absolute beast that was Windows 95 (if you're reading this and you don't even know what Windows XP is, then, honestly, don't worry about it).
1995 also saw the launch of the first PlayStation console in Europe and the US and – everyone's favourite karoke song – 'Wonderwall' by Oasis was also released.
Anyway, enough about the past. How about booking yourselves a ticket to see Clueless in the year twenty twenty five?!
