Disney is planning new Toy Story, Frozen and Zootropolis sequels

Disney fans are celebrating today with the announcement of brand new movies in the Toy Story, Frozen and Zootropolis franchises. Newly re-appointed Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that Toy Story 5, Frozen 3 and Zootropolis 2 will be winging their way into our hearts and minds in the coming years.

“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and [Zootropolis],” Iger said. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”

Initiated in 1995, the Toy Story franchise paved the way for feature-length CGI animation. It utilised the nascent capabilities of the format to present an utterly joyous and universal concept: what if our toys came to life once we left the room? Little wonder that the movie spawned three sequels, the second and third of which are regarded as masterpieces of family cinema.

The most recent movie in the series, 2019's Toy Story 4, maintained the franchise's commercial success by grossing $1.07 billion. It also claimed the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

The empowering Frozen series was kick-started in 2013 and 'Let It Go' became an immediate earworm, eventually scooping the Oscar for Best Original Song. 2019's sequel Frozen 2 was a huge hit, although not quite as big as the first, grossing $1.45 billion at the box office.

Zootropolis (named Zootopia in the USA and Canada) was a critically acclaimed 2016 adventure set in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals. The movie's sly social satire for grown-ups fused with eye-popping animation for the youngsters and the movie amassed $1.02 billion. As with Toy Story 4, it won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
