Nintendo is switching to the silver screen with Legend of Zelda casting announced for live action movie

While it’s not yet known what game the live action Legend of Zelda movie will take its plot from (there are over 20 video games in the franchise including spin-offs), the main characters, Link and Zelda, have been cast, with British stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Baragson named.

Nintendo is once again bringing one of its biggest IPs to the big screen – though you’ve got a bit of a wait on your hands. There will be a live action Legend of Zelda movie coming in 2027, already pencilled in with a release date of 7th May, 2027.

The storyline remains a mystery, but it was revealed that Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, 16, would be portraying Link, and Bo Bragason, 21, will star as Zelda.

Both are fairly new to the industry, with Ainsworth known for voicing Pinocchio in Disney’s 2022 live action remake, while Bragason’s biggest role so far was playing Roxy Jackson in the TV series Renegade Nell, as well as starring in a couple of BBC One dramas.

When revealing the news, video game designer and film producer Shigeru Miyamoto said he was “very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen.”

As mentioned, we don’t yet know what specific Legend of Zelda game will be adapted for the big screen, though Screen Rant’s detective work implies it could be Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Link’s Awakening, Twilight Princess, or Skyward Sword, given Ainsworth is quite young and there are only a handful of games that fit the timeline in which Link is in his late teens.

That said, there are also possibilities of Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time also being adapted. We’ll just have to wait and see – and whip out our consoles in the meantime.
