Back to the Future

Great, Scott! It’s been 40 years since Back to the Future came out and Marty McFly and Doc took us on an incredible journey in the DeLorean. Back to the Future topped the charts as the highest grossing movie in the box office that year, making over $200 million, and had two sequels released in 1989 and 1990.

The Breakfast Club

Don’t you forget about me! We won’t, don’t you worry. 80s movies hit different, especially those at the hands of John Hughe’s magic. 1985 saw the release of The Breakfast Club, along with the song ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ by Simple Minds, a teen coming-of-age comedy-drama that followed five high schoolers stuck in detention on a Saturday. Over the course of the detention, the group opens up about their struggles and form heartwarming bonds.

The year of the sequels with Rambo: First Blood II and Rocky IV

It’s not just a 2020s thing – the movie industry loves a sequel and a reboot. Both Rambo and Rocky were huge and took second and third for the highest grossing movies of the year with these sequels. Now all we can think about is getting Rocky and Rambo in a room together to fight it out. Oh wait… Yeah, a good year for Sylvester Stallone who wrote and starred in both.

Out of Africa

The Oscar winner for Best Picture that release year was Out of Africa, earning the award at the 58th Academy Awards held in March 1986. Sydney Pollack also took home Best Director, while Meryl Streep was nominated for Best Actress. The film was an adaptation of a book by Karen Blixen under the pseudonym of Isak Dinesen and is set in Kenya where a Danish baroness and plantation owner falls in love with a game hunter.

What else is turning 40 in 2025?

Obviously there are a lot of celebrities turning 40 this year, including Disney Channel stars Raven-Symoné and Ashley Tisdale. Kiera Knightley and Amanda Seyfried also turn 40. Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) came out in 1985, alongside other hits like We Built This City by Starship and Take on Me by a-ha

This was also the year that Coca Cola faced backlash after sweetening the drink’s formula and was the year of Bob Geldof’s Live Aid concert in which Freddie Mercury established his iconic “Aaaay-o” moment in Wembley Stadium.
