The “greatest experience of watching a film in years” is what legendary filmmaker Spike Lee had to say after attending an early screening of Sinners, the new supernatural horror movie that’s arriving at Cineworld on April 18th. Directed by Ryan Coogler and set in the United States of the 1930s, this much-lauded chiller sees Michael B. Jordan playing troubled twin brothers who return to their hometown to start a new life, only to be confronted by a greater evil. Based on what we know so far, Sinners looks like an unmissable treat for fans of the horror genre – and making it even more exciting is the fact that you can view it not only in standard 2D but also in Cineworld’s special formats, IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX and Superscreen.
But what’s so special about Sinners, and why should you come to Cineworld to see it? Read on to find out…
The plot sounds thrilling… and chilling!
As previously mentioned, Sinners is set in the United States in the 1930s – the so-called Jim Crow era when racial segregation and discrimination dominated the Deep South. The story revolves around twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan), who return to their hometown in an attempt to leave behind their troubled past. On arrival, though, they come up against a far greater threat than anything they’ve experienced before. There have long been rumours that vampires feature in the film, but director Ryan Coogler teased that blood suckers aren’t the only malevolent force the brothers will come up against. “The film is very genre fluid,” he told Junkee. “Yes, vampires are an element, but that’s not the only supernatural element. I think it’s going to surprise folks in a good way.”
The director has a great track record
Ryan Coogler is one of the most talented directors around – and he has the awards to prove it. His 2013 debut, the biographical drama Fruitvale Station, earned him the coveted Caméra d’Or gong at the Cannes Film Festival, while his 2018 Marvel movie Black Panther picked up a whole bunch of accolades. Coogler and Michael B. Jordan have previously worked together on several occasions, with the actor having appeared in both the aforementioned films, as well as the 2015 boxing favourite Creed.
Spike Lee loved the movie
Sinners received gushing praise from Spike Lee after the legendary director attended an early screening of the movie. The filmmaker, who’s made such classic movies as Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X and BlacKkKlansman, was so impressed by what he’d just seen, he took to social media to share his thoughts, writing comments such as “Da Performances, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Original Score, Songs, Visual Effects are DOPE and what else ya want?” Have a look at his full Instagram post below.
Watching it in Cineworld’s special formats will be an awesome experience
We’re incredibly excited to be able to show Sinners in IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX and Superscreen – and you should be too, as this stunning and action-packed movie will take on a whole new dimension when viewed in these formats. During the early stages of the film, there’s an eerie sense of forboding as Smoke and Stack feel their way around their creepy new surroundings, and with Cineworld’s state-of-the-art visuals and incredible lifelike sound, you’ll be fully immersed in this chilling landscape, ramping the horror up a few levels. Then, when all hell breaks loose later in the film, Cineworld’s 4DX format will come into its own, thrusting you into the thick of things with realistic seat movement and an array of sensory effects, including wind, water, authentic smells and strobe lighting. If you like cinema at its most thrilling and visceral, then this is the one for you.
The trailer looks amazing
Ever since we watched the trailer for Sinners (see above), we’ve been chomping at the bit to see this movie. The whole mood just seems very unsettling (just what we like in a horror film!), while that quote “Of all the things that I’ve seen, I ain’t ever seen no demons, no ghosts, no magic... till now" leaves the viewer pondering what nastiness awaits the two brothers. Whatever it is, the clip at the end, where one of them is seen blasting away with a shotgun, suggests that the boys aren’t prepared to go down without a fight. Will it be enough? There’s only one way to find out…
