A Minecraft Movie: Meet the characters from the all-new action blockbuster

Pickaxes at the ready – A Minecraft Movie is finally landing at Cineworld cinemas next week (from April 4th)! Some ten years in the making, this new, Jared Hess-directed action adventure is one of the most hotly anticipated films in a long time, with gaming fans around the world eager to see how the Mojang Studios phenomenon has been translated into a big-screen blockbuster.

Taking inspiration from the videogame, A Minecraft Movie centres around four misfits who enter a mysterious portal that pulls them into a strange, cubic land called the Overworld. There, they happen upon a master crafter named Steve, who acts as their tour guide and teaches them the skills they’ll need to find their way home. Before they can return, though, they’re called upon to help battle some evil forces who are threatening the very existence of this unfamiliar place.

Stunning to look at, and packed with breathtaking action sequences, A Minecraft Movie is an unmissable treat for the whole family – especially when viewed in Cineworld’s special formats, IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX and Superscreen. Before you take your seats, though, here’s a round-up of all the main characters…

Steve (Jack Black)

Based on the main character from the Minecraft videogame, Steve was the first human to arrive in the Overworld, having stumbled upon it while tunnelling his way through a disused mine. By the time we meet him, he’s lived in the cubic kingdom for many years and acts as a kind of sage to the local people. Experienced and exuberant, Steve serves as both a useful guide to the four misfits, and a thoroughly entertaining character for us viewers.

Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Jason Momoa)

As he states during the movie, Garrett Garrison was crowned “Gamer of the Year, 1989.” However, 1989 was a long time ago and it quickly transpires that his decades-old honour isn’t going to give him much of an advantage in the Overworld. “He’s still stuck in the past, he’s got a little bit of arrested development,” director Jared Hess said of Jason Momoa’s character. “He’s holding on to that former glory.” While The Garbage Man might not be much help to the group (to start with anyway), his difficulty in translating those ’80s gaming skills to a modern gaming environment might resonate with a few of the parents out there!

Natalie (Emma Myers)

Smart and strong, Natalie is protective of her younger brother Henry. She also doesn’t hold Steve or Garrett in the highest of esteem when they first meet, which leads to a few moments of friction. By the way, if you’re wondering where you’ve seen actress Emma Myers before, she has starring roles in two popular TV shows. Not only does she play Enid Sinclair in Wednesday, but she’s also Pip in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.

Dawn (Danielle Brooks)

A character created especially for the movie, Dawn is a real estate agent who acts as a kind of parental figure to Natalie and Henry. With her wacky, colourful clothes and no-nonsense personality, she’s sure to go down a storm with viewers. Danielle Brooks (who also starred in 2023’s The Color Purple) was thrilled to be a part of the movie and reckons fans are going to love the Minecraft world that’s been created: “It’s so lifelike,” she told IGN. “I don’t know how much I can share, but I do know fans will not be disappointed with the world they’ve created."

Henry (Sebastian Hansen)

The younger brother of Natalie, Henry is another clever kid, whose creativity proves invaluable in helping the group to achieve its goals. And actor Sebastian Hansen says that he didn’t have to look far to find inspiration for the character. “Henry is very relatable to me, very similar,” he told Time for Kids. “He’s a really smart kid who likes to draw and be creative. I’m also very creative and want to try different things. Throughout the movie, Henry gets to do that.”

Vice Principal Marlene (Jennifer Coolidge)

We don’t know much about VP Marlene, other than the fact that she’s seen in the final trailer for A Minecraft Movie running over a Nitwit villager in her car (“Oh no, not again!”), and that she’s played by Jennifer Coolidge. The veteran actress and comedian has appeared in numerous classic movies, from American Pie to Legally Blonde – so we have high hopes that she’ll be brilliant in this role.

Malgosha (Rachel House)

Together with her son, General Chungus, and their battalion of piglins, Malgosha is hellbent on conquering the Overworld and pulling the plug on any kind of creativity. The actress who plays her, Rachel House, is brilliant in the role – which is no surprise when you consider the long list of popular movies she’s lent her voice talents to: Moana, Coco and Soul, to name but a few.
