You may have heard that Richard Linklater (the man behind the Before romance movie trilogy, Boyhood, and School of Rock) is planning to adapt Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Merrily We Roll Along. More exciting still for musical theatre lovers, the cast includes Tony award-winner Ben Platt, as well as the beloved Paul Mescal, Booksmart’s Beanie Feldstein, and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The catch? You’ll be waiting another 15 years for the film to come out. Luckily, Cineworld will be showing the Broadway production – starring Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe – from the 4th until the 6th December.

Production of the film adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along could go on until 2040. Hardly unexpected given Linklater’s commitment to filming 2014’s Boyhood across 12 years.
Merrily We Roll Along’s plot spans two decades, though the story is told in reverse. It follows Frank Shepard (Groff in the latest Broadway production), a successful songwriter turned film producer as his trajectory takes a turn from a starry-eyed pauper to a flush filmmaker, including all the loves and losses along the way.
Revived in 2023 at the Hudson Theatre in New York City, Jonathan Groff’s Franklin Shepard is joined by Daniel Radcliffe as Charley Kringas, Shepard’s former best friend and collaborator, and Lindsay Mendez as Mary Flynn, another close friend of Shepard’s and a theatre critic.
The Broadway revival in 2023 was an absolute sell-out and ended up sweeping up a number of Tony Awards nominations, as well as winning Best Revival of a Musical. Jonathan Groff also took home Best Actor in a Musical, while Daniel Radcliffe was named Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
Whether you’re a musical fan and know the story of Merrily We Roll Along or not, this is a must view for anyone who plans to be front row for Richard Linklater’s adaptation.
Cineworld will be showing its cinematic debut from the 4th until the 6th December.
